There is no credible evidence to support God belief. It's just that simple.
With all due respect, if you seriously believe there is some outside force controlling world events, you must not be paying attention, or, you must believe the outside force is drunk, on drugs or insane. There are no other available choices given the utter chaos that rules the world.
This is for Gary (below):

Gary does not seem to know the meaning of the word "agnostic." Agnostic literally translates as "ignorant." I can assure Gary I am not "ignorant" and am an atheist because there is no credible evidence to support God belief. Agnostics are either stupid or cowardly atheists since most of them claim they don't know what they believe while at the same time claiming they don't believe in God.

Nobody 'believes in atheism' Atheism can only be considered a 'belief' in the same way that not collecting stamps might be considered a hobby.
The foolishness that serves you as a substitute for logic and reason is a logical fallacy (a flaw in thinking) known as the "Argument From Incredulity"... which is a sub-category of the "Argumentum ad Ignorantiam" (Argument From Ignorance). It goes something like this: "I can't conceive of how this might have come to be; therefore, God did it."
That does not point to a limitation of nature... rather, it exemplifies a limitation of knowledge and/or intellect. Also, it is intellectually dishonest, since it does not (as scientists do) ACKNOWLEDGE the limitation of knowledge and/or intellect... it merely invokes the fanciful idea of a supernatural creator-entity to manifest the ILLUSION that cognitive dissonance has been resolved.
'Faith' (wishful, magical thinking) is a substitute for evidence.
'Belief' (the internalized 'certainty' that you are privy to the 'truth' pertaining to some fundamental aspect of existence and/or reality) is a substitute for knowledge.
faith + belief = self-delusion and willful ignorance

Read this essay... it provides a very good explanation: "Does God Exist?"

Okay, this is an easy one. Imagine that you were born in India. You might be brought up to believe in 330,000,000 Gods (Hinduism), or venerate a dozen or so Gurus (Sihkism), or just the one God (Christianity or Islam) or no Gods at all (Bhuddism).
Point is that everyone tends to believe what those around them believe and I feel that if there was one true God everyone would just know it, make their one choice, beliieve in Him or not, and suffer the consequences of a bad decision.
Saying that atheists "BELIEVE IN ATHEISM" seems to be trying to make atheism 'just another creed' which is silly really....there is no dogma there, nothing that one has to 'take on faith.'
The original thought was that God was up in Heaven, or above the heavens on the other side of the firmament where God kept a supply of life-giving water which rained down upon us to keep the pastures green which made our animals healthy and therefore we had to burn sacrifices back to Heaven to reciprocate.
Fastforward to today, and poor God is stuck somewhere outside of Space and Time itself, if you can wrap your head around that. And that's the thing, atheists would rather accept the fact that we are all going to die and that is going to be the end of it.
Christians, Muslims, Hindus, etc. etc....and even Bhuddists (who are mostly atheist) cannot and will not accept that final period and the end of their life sentence.
May your God(s) bring you happiness....hope this helped you.

There is not a soul on this planet now or ever that has ever seen, heard, touched God no matter what they claim. The establishments claiming to be in touch with god are nothing but con men out to gain self-righteous power, brainwash and then fleece people such as yourself. Organized religion thrives on the distant past since little is known except for a few archaeological finds and warped verbal history. The only governing power in an individual's life is themself.

It's not a feeling....
Let me reverse and slightly modify your question to help answer it.
"Why do people believe in god"
Originally, early man could not explain the natural world around them. You can see this in the study of paganism where the gods were responsible for the sun rising, the seasons, and other natural functions.
As science figured out how these functions truly worked, these gods became irrelevant.
In our modern times, science and technology is increasing our knowledge of the world at an exponential pace.
Theists are finding themselves having to defend a belief that is beginning to make less and less sense, kind of like the high priests of Zeus several millenia ago.
You only have to look at the church's persecution of those who said the earth went around the sun and not the other way around

The fact that so many people are born disabled, die in terrible accidents when they are young and are abused by others. If there is a God why do so many innocent people suffer? Christians say because of the devil or Adam sinned and we are still paying for that. If it's the devil then why can't God intervene if he is more powerful? The Adam and Eve theory seems a little unfair as why people who have done nothing wrong suffer for the sins of others is beyond my comprehension. You could say God has his reasons and that we should trust him/her but it is hard to believe in a god that makes no sense. Maybe I will change my mind in time but I will have to understand the torture of the innocent first.

I know that Nature exists. We can observe nature, measure it, interact with it. Not some human like entity that is everywhere, but nowhere at the same time that can not be observed, measured, or interacted with.
God is displayed as having emotions, and human needs. The Bible paints God as an animal.. needing love, having spiteful emotions, jealousy, etc.
I can not believe in a human like entity that is all knowing and all powerful.
Another thing is an absolute lack of any evidence. Plus all of the religions that claim their version is correct.
There are far too many reasons to list here. Want to know why, look at our questions. Most of us have dozens.

There is no proof.
I also don't believe that styrofoam is capable of intelligent thought. I also don't believe that my computer eats people in the middle of the night. Why? Because there is no proof of it. HOWEVER, no one (or at least, almost no one) believes those things either, and so I don't have to explain why I don't.
The burden of proof for the existence of deity(ies) lies on those who suppose that it/they exist. Others may feel as though there is a deity, but they cannot convince me that it is objectively true based off of emotion, any more than they can convince me that mice are actually running the planet just because it happens to be in a book.

For me it is simple. Most people who believe in god(s), whatever their particular religion is, say that they can look at the world and see evidence of god's love in the world around them.
When I look at the world, I don't see evidence of a super-powerful being of love. All I see is selfishness, hate, and all other kinds of badness. So much evil happens in the world that I can't accept that it was created by a being of love, no matter what reasoning your particular religious text gives.
I find it easier to believe that we came to be by accident, and there is no being controlling the universe. At least this way, we only have ourselves to blame for the terrible condition of the world.
If god really does exist, I think he is neglectful of his children at best, and sadistic at worst. I'd prefer not to live with such a being for all eternity.

I go with J T, and I think that if God ever existed, he must have run off to some far away galaxy to create a more perfect sort of being after realizing what mankind has turned into.
