cold sores are a Herpes virus, and there is no cure.
To minimize the pain and speed up the healing process, you can use Abreva - it is sold over the counter, or Zovirax, which is a prescription lotion.
Valtrex is a pill that can help reduce the number of outbreaks, but again, it can't cure it.
Once you have Herpes it is ALWAYS in your system. Immune System break downs can encourage outbreaks - so if you get sick, you might get an outbreak. Poor sleep, lack of exercise, stress and an unhealthy diet will also encourage break outs. So eat well, exercise, get lots of sleep, and your break outs will stay minimal.
To keep them from spreading, don't touch open sores, and if you do, wash your hands immediately. Don't let anyone else touch them and do not kiss anyone when you have an open sore.

i know this sounds weird, but i promise it works. i heard about it years ago and never did it because i thought it sounded so stupid. then, finally, i tried it and it has worked every single time i've had a cold sore since then (like a dozen or so times).
it's earwax. you have to put your own earwax on the sore AS SOON AS it starts forming (right when you feel that little tickle and there are just one or two little bumps). if you do, it'll stop growing and just stay one or two little bumps, which heal in a couple of days.
i'm not kidding, i know it sounds stupid. do yourself a huge favor and try it.

see your doctor get a prescription, Zovirax is popular, I use over the counter abreva it cost $15.00 for this tiny tube or Herpecin which is over the counter too I usually use them together. There's nothing that makes them go away completly I've been getting them for almost 20 years now. Their no fun, don't kiss or have direct contact with someone is the best way to keep them from spreading.

zinc ointment, better nutrition, and general health. Cold sores are actually a Herpes simplex infection. the virus tends to hide in nerves and becomes active when you are stressed. There is no cure but the body does usually fix it on its own and becomes immune to further outbreaks. (but this can take years. Check with a doctor.)

i use this stuff called zilactin...you can get it otc, works wonders, it is basically a film that doesn't allow moisture in there and it drys it up quick. I put it on as soon as i feel the "tingle" and sometimes don't even get them that way! It's a little pricey, but well worth it and lasts quite a while.

Novitra cream is over the counter at the Pharmacy. Call your doctor for prescription for Valtrex or Acyclovir. Don't touch them and if you do wash hands well.

ABREVA!!! it costs about $17, but it works like a charm.
You may need to visit your dr. and tell him your ailment. He/She can put you on a prescription of meds that will control the amount and severity of your outbreaks. I.E. Zovicor or Valtrex

Retin-A by rx works great. It dries up and peels off. also, a short course of Acyclovir or Valtrex--also by rx helps for further breakouts. and remember to always moisturize your lips well--vaseline works, esp. in cold or windy weather.
