Kids who play an instrument do better in school.
So do kids who are involved in sports.
So do kids who play chess.
I strongly suspect that *any* regular extracurricular activity is correlated with increased success in school. It's not the music, it's the fact that you have the passion and self-discipline to get up and do something with your life.

I think it might be theory..........However, the fact that one can play an instrument is a sign of intelligence. In the study of the mind; scientist have found that music stimulates the brain and encourages thought.
I think the cellists are smarter......but the drummers are BETTER in BED.

I agree with the tie between early childhood music education and cognitive ability. Drums? Why not? See attached. Columbia Teacher's College is doing a lot of work on this.

I wouldn't say it makes you smarter but there have been studies that show children who play an instrument and read music, do better in math

I don't know if it can make you smarter than you already are naturally, but it does cause you to use parts of your brain that may otherwise go under-used.
