the vw bugs of yesteryear would catch fire because the gas line would separate from the carb. to fix this just disconnect the fuel line and take a pr of pliers and wiggle the tube that goes into the carb, pull it out and turn it around and tap it back in place and you are good to go

I've never heard of a VW, old or new model, exploding. Why do you ask?

I have never heard of one randomly exploding. I have seen a few catch fire though.

about every five minutes, another VW burst into a ball of flames.
