Okay, I have naturally curly hair. I've never colored, permed, etc. I heard from several people that because it's curly I shouldn't use shampoo, because that dries it up. So for about 2 months I've washed it with just water, then conditioned. The frizz that I had before is almost completely gone. Has anybody else heard of this? What do you think?

Lorraine Massey advocates curly haired girls giving up shampoo in her book Curly Girl. Frequent hair washing is a relatively new thing, and not shampooing your hair does not automatically mean it's dirty. It just means you aren't using the typical harsh cleaning agents to remove dirt and dead skin cells from your head. If you vigorously massage your scalp while conditioning, and rinse well, your head will be clean. Soaps and detergents just make cleaning easier; they are by no means necessary. You could clean your hands using very warm water and vigorous rubbing for about 30 seconds as well as you do using soap, but soap makes it easier and most people are lazy - however it's the friction and the flow of the water that really does the cleaning. If you do find that you'd be more comfortable shampooing occasionally, then stick with a gentle shampoo. If you find your hair starts to get greasy, then by all means use shampoo. You could also try Massey's No-Poo (I've never tried it; my hair's actually wavy at best, but I've heard lots about her No-Poo method). And as for getting lice because of not shampooing, that's ridiculous - in fact, lice prefer super clean hair because a cuticle that has been stripped of most of it's oils is easier for the eggs to adhere too.

I also have naturally curly hair. Forget what you've heard. Shampoo only removes build-up and crap that's gunked up your hair. I stick to showering every other day and use shampoo only on your scalp area. The ends don't really need the lather because the soap run down it and cleans them. Using a lot of shampoo on the lower parts of your hair can dry them out. Also, use conditioner only on the lower parts of your hair (ears down) because the natural oils close to your scalp keep your hair conditioned. Good luck. They also make shampoo for curly hair but I've never tried it.

I would shampoo only sometimes, like once a week. If you go too long without shampooing, the oil and build up can actually cause your hair folicles to suffocate and your hair could fall out. It also retards the growth cycle. I would use a shampoo that's for very curly hair and just do it once a week or once every two weeks and use water and conditioner the rest of the time.

No, I havent'. Well, you should still shampoo. Maybe all that oil and build-up made your hair less frizzing. But if you have oily hair, at least wash it twice a week. If you don't, wash it once a week. Hmm...maybe the shampoo makes your hair dry it up. Or maybe you're using too much shampoo. Use a pea size drop of shampoo.I might try that idea (but with a little shampooing). Maybe I'll get rid of my frizz. =)

The reason why your frizz has propably gone away is from using conditioner and the natural oils in your hair. There are many shampoos on the market for hair that is dry and frizzy. You need to get a good one and you will see the difference in your hair. You need to keep your hair clean.Plus a good trim is a must.

My daughter has naturally curly hair also, and we usually only wash it once a week. I found that if you waited to long, in her case it dried out?? I guess if that works for you, then that is how you should do it. I know she gets really frustrated with her hair, so if you can get the desired look by waiting to wash it, then more power to ya.

my hairdresser has told me no matter what kinda hair you have to only wash it once or twice a week as needed. that the shampoo is very hair on all hair and strips it from what it needs that the conditioner only makes it dirty again from the shampoo stripping it so your hair can feel normal. i wash my hair every other day and it feels great. I think you should definitely shampoo sometimes!!!

No, you should definitely use shampoo. However, if your hair is naturally oily, only shampoo every second or third day. You need the shampoo to rid your hair of the oils and dust and dirt it accumulates, just plain water just isn't enough. To keep down the frizzies (I have them too) use a good conditioner and a shine product after the shower. Also, switch shampoos every so often to get rid of residue. Shampooing is a must, you don't want to get lice or something nasty like that.

have you ever watched "what not to wear"? their hairdresser Nick Arosso revealed that he washes his hair every 3 months... that's it! his hair is really curly but looks shiny and soft. there are some wonderful products that take place of actually washing your hair... some are powders, some are creams... look for some online or in high end salons.

to prevent build up of product such as mousse, gel, or hairspray i would recommend rinsing with warm stale beer then cool water once in a while.
