Instead of explaining we were too poor to afford a G.I Joe, my parents explained this would be more powerful and exciting than G.I Joe. I played with this toy for days, until my best friend said "Hey, this isn't a toy! This is a rock! And that's not a gun, its a stick!! Scotch Taped ON!! YOU IDIOT!!"

Then he beat the crap out of me...so i threw my G.I. Rock toy at him. Now I have no friends, and no toys. But then my dad gave me a "Beer Can Cowboy."

Were they wrong?

Your Parents were completely justified in their "way" of not telling you that you were poor. If they had told you, "Son, we are too poor to afford some of the same toys your friends have." then you would have taken that negitive answer and known you were "less" than average. From then on everything you do would be influenced by the fact that you were poor, making your self-worth also "poor." The longer you keep that fact hidden from your children the more likely they are to develop some kind of positive self-esteem instead of negitive. They should have also explained to you that your toys were "special" because they come from a family that has what most families are lacking and that is love. The "Beer Can Cowboy" is a fine gift too if he makes sure it is empty first.

How much of this story is true? I felt bad until I got to the friend beating the crap out of you part (doesn't sound believable). But then the Beer Can Cowboy made me laugh.

If your dad had money for beer, how come he didn't have money for a G.I. Joe?

If you're serious than no. If you have/had kids then you'd understand how expenssive toys can be. So maybe you should be thankful you at least had something. To me homemade toys at least come from the heart and mean more than the 50 dollars or more you spend on toys from the toystore and what not.

Hey at least they didn't steal your toys and give them back to you for your birthday(box and wrapping included). There's no sense in spending half your paycheck so your kid can have a toy for a few days, get tired of it, then throw it in the closet to be lost until your next yard sale or next trip to goodwill.
