When I ask a question regarding religion, I get mostly nasty answers asking me why I care if I'm an atheist, or I'm going to hell, and so on. Example: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060919182023AAyyaSF
Humans are naturally curious creatures. How can anyone understand anything without asking questions?
Why must many believers condemn us who simply ask questions?

a_delphic_oracle: Look at the question I am referring to. I can't get anymore neutral than that.

Spookshow, I am a believer and I get the same from other believers. Some people just do not know how to answer a question and instead think that an answer is their opportunity to step up on a soapbox and look down on others. But of course they will do so and call it tough love, even though they are ignorant to any of the details. I think my favorite was when I asked a question about Christian Atheism. Nowhere did it say I considered myself along those lines, I was merely asking a question on the theory of it. That sure caused a lot of people to think (for some reason) that I was saying that I am a Christian Atheist and am trying to justify myself. Man, the things people read into a question...

Know that I feel for you...we share at least that in common.

An open forum like Yahoo answers leaves itself accessible to participants that run the gamut from highly mature and intellectual, to those who are puerile and rude. In the quest for knowledge it is incumbent of the questioner to subject himself or herself to a wide range of responses. Some of the answers will be well educated, some simplistic, and many down right insulting. However, I would not be deterred because of the ad hominem attacks of few, because the responses gained from those who take the time to represent clear and cogent ideas are invaluable.

So far I haven’t stated anything that is offense, and I consider myself a Christian. I respect your right to ask a question, as long it is done without a patronizing spirit. So, yes, many Christians on this forum will respond to your question with all the maturity and seriousness that your questions deserve.

As an aside, my answer to your linked Yahoo question, is that numbers have little consequence to Christians who are not literalists (which the majority of Christians aren’t). The 666 from my understanding has little to do with Satan, as much as it has to do with an attempt by the early church to vilify pagan religions that used this number sequence in their worship and iconography. Hence, legitimate symbols of other competing religions became associated with Satan.

Keep asking questions, and I hope you will have the patience to ferret out the juvenile responses so that you can benefit from those who sincerely want to answer your question.

Becuse, many of these people have been taught that any questioning of their religion is evil, and they feel the need to fight it. Its a response based in fear.

There ARE many religious people ( like myself) who are not afraid to question their faith, faith does not grow if you don't learn more about it , which you can only do be asking questions with an open mind.

I've been ignoring religious questions, just to avoid dealing with that element, but your question has made me decide to contribute to this topic more often.

I believe you have posted the wrong question because there is not one insult or nasty response on it. Two religious individuals ask you why did you ask such a question when you are not a believer and you condemned them by telling them to"read the details." I have seem ur answers and they speak otherwise about ur character. How sad! Something is wrong with you.

I am a Christian and I am sorry you have not got answers to your questions till now!!but may be u have rejected the truth yourself and always expected some kind of soft answer !!! well seek the truth and you shall receive it!!the truth of God is a two-edged sword which splits the sinful and proud human soul into many pieces!! people are not willing really to hear the truth!! well if your actions are taking you towards hell than please don't expect to be soothed by comforting words like" Honey, everything will be alright"!! No it won't!! May God Bless You with truth today!I will pray for you!I myself have lived a rebellious and life of a knife-trotting goon full of hatred and anger till God touched my soul and transformed me!! I still have many weaknesses,But God comforts me and have provided all answer in Bible and through the sacrifice of His Beloved Son,Jesus Christ!Amen!!

It's how the R+S section is.

If you ask a question, wanting to know an answer to it, you have to put a disclaimer at the top.

After so many people ask questions that bash other religions, people become defensive immediately, because they think it might be a jab at their religion.

I am a believer but I don't condem anyone for their beliefs. People who are closed minded are (in my humble opinion) ignorant. I may disagree with your choices, but you're as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine.

Unfortunately, however, not all people are as comfortable with themselves to be as open-minded and free thinking as some of us. Ignorance is far more common than intelligence, and those who would "tie you to the whipping post" unfortunately exhibit their ignorance a little too proudly.

Let me ask you this question....Why do non believers recieve the word of God when it is shared with them by a Chrisitan, as being condemned by that Christian?

It is the word of God that they are sharing with you. Don't get mad at the messanger so to speak. If someone for example told A Christian that they stole something, and that Chrsitians showed this scripture to them to show them what they did wrong....

Exodus 20:15 Thou shalt not steal.

It is the word of God that is making them feel guilty or condemned, and not the Christian who shared it with them. Peopel need to Take some responsibilitiy for their life, and stop blaming others for the way the word of God makes them feel when they hear it. . It is designed to help all of us take a deep look into our selves. and see the error of our ways, so we can become a better person and free our self from the grips of satan.

Christians have to follow the word of God evey day. They are just doing what God tells us to do , and that is share His word with others. Basically, the word of God is like a mirror that helps us all see into ourselves, and shows us the way to imporve our selves before the Lord.
