Last last good product with the Norton name on it was the Norton Utilities for Windows 3.1 about 12 years ago. Since then, they've become bloatware that does more to slow your computer down than it does to speed it up and/or protect it.

Symantec (the company that owns the norton line) keeps buying other companies and turning their products into cr@p. PowerQuest Drive Image (now sloppily merged with Ghost) is a prime example.

Another good example is Roxio's GoBack product - it used to work quite well on the systems I saw it installed on... but since they took it over, it causes more people to post questions like "I can't access my drive and now I might lose my data!" than any single product I've seen.

As far as the antivirus product goes, from what I've seen and experienced, they take WAY too long to get virus definitions out. A client of mine using Symantec's corporate version was infected with a nasty worm a couple of weeks back... other antivirus (Dr. Web, Sophos) caught the bug, Symantec didn't catch it for 3+ days and $1600 in my consulting fees. 3 days later, it protected them... after all their systems were infected.

Summary? Symantec (and in turn, Norton) is a great product for consultants like me - we make SO MUCH MONEY because people and companies use Norton/Symantec, it's not funny. Really, Symantec (and in turn Norton) is nothing but a marketing company - that's the only thing they know how to do well - sell you cr@p that doesn't work well!

As for what you should use - I have long used McAfee... and it's been reasonably reliable. If you are a business, use Sophos or McAfee Enterprise - but if you are not a business, Sophos doesn't make a consumer version and McAfee Enterprise is NOT available for home use. The McAfee Consumer product is ok... but I'm not nearly as big a fan of that as I am the Enterprise product - But McAfee still releases updates faster than anyone other than Sophos in general.

AVG Free is the best one I've seen. It is constantly updated, and catches viral infections that most other anti-virus software misses.

I avoid Mcafee and Norton because they are very hard to remove for 1, and 2 they act almost like viral infections on your system.

Always do Google searches to find more information than you will ever need. Then research any software that you are interested in. Find out what problems other users might be experiencing with the software. Try more than one before making a final decision.

For free? AVG. Ones that you have to buy? Symantec Anti-Virus. Avoid McAfee at all cost.

I use Trend Micro PC-Cillin and have never had a problem that couldn't be fixed quickly and easily. Also, the best free antivirus I have used is AVG.

Norton is the best but it has a huge learning curve. Remember that you can only have 1 antivirus installed on your computer, or else they will counteract each other.
