Actually, one of the very first forms of air conditioning was used in 1881. After President Garfield was shot his doctors advised that the room he was in was too hot and would need some form of cooling. An army engineer came up with the idea of using fans to blow air over blocks of ice and on into the room. It was reported that this reduced the room temp by as much as 20 degrees. Unfortunately it also required an estimated 500 lbs. of ice daily. President Garfield succumbed to his wounds a few days later.
The principal of passing air over a cool surface was picked up by an inventor named Carrier who used ammonia (because it evaporates quickly and evaporation draws heat away). The ammonia was contained in sealed tubes were it would evaporate then re-condense as air circulated over the tubes. These refrigeration machines were inefficient and about the size of an average home closet. The invention of freon in the 1950 made A/C smaller and more efficient.
