Some may think ha ha your an idiot, some may think they want to debate me.

Imagine being at home one night and an instant message comes from jim darwin, wondering if atoms have souls.

Funny, people get in their little boxes of religion or theology, and consider all questions that are different from their realm to be mocking their religion.

Then they shoot their mouth off about wanting to debate.

Its yahoo answers, questions are going to be asked.

soul for me relates to the mind & self-awareness & knowledge of good & bad component. atoms, tomatoes, animals, etc don't have that.
however I believe everything, from the whole universe down to the nano-component of the simplest electron are functioning orderly sustain by the grace power of God.

The only thing I know exists for sure is my own awareness. I can give a (relatively) simple ontological explanation of the idea that consciousness is all there is, and everything else is a manifestation of that. The difference in levels of micro and macro evolution is the difference in the expression of consciousness. This, interestingly, seems to be the only solution to the problem of how self consciousness would evolve at all; the entire universe as a system developing expressions until it can experience its own nature in all possible ways. If that central consciousness is what you mean by soul, then atoms are soul, but not in the same way or complexity as higher order entities.

Rocks have souls and they can communicate with you.
(Plants can talk to you, too.)

The difficulty with understanding how a rock can have a soul comes from associating the soul with the human body and identity. Your soul does not have a unique human identity and is not bound by a physcial manifestation (a body, a tree, dirt).

The soul of a rock is only an aspect; just like the soul of a human.

I have never encountered the soul of a styrofoam cup. I'm not sure if that makes styrofoam cups an abomination. Or, how it's even possible to create something devoid of life on a planet that is comprised of nothing but life.

Given the fact that everything is made of the same "stuff," either everything has a soul, or nothing has a soul.

Humans are no different, on a subatomic level, than rocks, water, air, or whatever.

Only egotistical humans supposedly have souls. The other billions of species are out of luck.

Good point there.
Ask away, but expect the challenges. It's a no-win situation. Either you keep your mouth shut and don't get respecr, or you open it and get harassed.

Souls are usually associated with consciousness. Do atoms have consciousness?

I figure it this way, if we have souls our animal friends do too. Plants are probably not going to have souls, just a guess.
