Why would I sit home alone during the holidays? I celebrate Christmas with my family same as I always have. My entire family has known I'm an atheist for the better part of a decade. I don't celebrate Christmas for Christ. I celebrate it to feel close to my family, to be able to give and receive, to spend quality time with the ones I love.

I just wanna know why Christians put up trees and decorate them when that was a Pagan Tradition for hundreds of yrs before Christianity claimed the Holy Day as their Christmas (Mass of Christ - Catholic). Actually, the decorating of the tree is in the Old Test and it seems, God doesn't like that. I wonder how many Protestants and other Non-Catholics put down the Catholic Church, yet still celebrate Christmas? How many put the Mistletoe over their doors? Which was an old Celtic tradition.

We could go on with this all day. I'm a Pagan and I don't put up a tree. I do decorate my house and exchange gifts, but there isn't a single Christian Icon that is attached to it. Though, I do celebrate it on Yuletide, my family is mainly Christian and we celebrate with them as well.

So I guess, if someone is of a different religion in your family, they aren't welcome at the dinner table?

For your information, assjackson, my whole family knows I am an atheist and I celebrate xmas with them regardless. By the way, December 25 used to be the date of a pagan holiday. The church moved jesus' birthday to that specific date so it would appear as though that's what the people were really celebrating.

So the real question appears to be why are all you christians celebrating a pagan holiday?

Edit:

I'm sorry, are you on a day pass? Try a little harder next time, 'Lezbo' fails to insult me...

Christmas falls on an old Pagan holiday. The Christians tried to adopt it to help convert Pagans. Now it is a present-giving holiday with it's own icons that don't include the cross. People enjoy a bright, festive holiday in the gloom of winter so they do it. We are even changing the greetings around the country to "Happy Holidays" which can include Jews, celebrating Hanukkah, and atheists, like me, just celebrating my family and friends. Take your Jesus and keep him, he has no place in my winter holiday.

I'm an atheist and I celebrate Christmas because of the following reasons:

1. It's such a commercial holiday anyway (even religious people have to admit this), I'm joining in on the fun of giving/receiving presents.

2. It's a great time to be with family and friends.

3. Tradition- since I've celebrated it since I was a baby, why stop now?

Basically, a lot of people celebrate it because it's a tradition and it's a commercialized day. Same with Valentine's Day. Most people (including me) have no idea what it's about, yet we still buy presents for our loved ones. Christmas used to be about religion, I'm sure, but not anymore.

My brother and his wife are "apatheists", and everyone in our family knows it, but they like to give as well as receive gifts and like to be around (some of) their relatives. There are many non-religious reasons to celebrate Christmas. Besides, work will be closed on Christmas for most atheists anyway, so maybe celebrating looks like a good option.

PS, to Steph W, that guy sounds like a creep! As a Pagan, I worked a couple of Christmases in exchange for Samhain (Halloween) off, and to be nice to the Christians there! I'd do the same now, except half my workplace is non-Christian and we all get off on Christmas to accommodate the other half.

It is because Christmas is not about Jesus except for those who make it about Jesus- it wasn't about Him to begin with- it is a pagan rooted holiday all about worshipping the flesh (which is the faith atheists follow- the flesh is their God), instant gratification (again flesh worship), and good 'feelings' (more flesh worship)

The celebration of Christmas is not and never was God ordained, it is paganism renamed and still celebrated in its flesh glorifying glory.

I don't judge or condemn Christians who celebrate this, I did for a long time.- I just urge them to get educated and pray about whether or not and how to approach the holidays- we cannot keep Christ in Christmas because He wasn't there to start with- it is a pagan/ atheist feast to begin with- I say let them have it!

I spend the holiday season with my family. I see christmas as a time to spend with your family and just be happy with each other. I don't really get any presents and the only ones I give are for the children, so to answer the question: I celebrate christmas to spend time with my family, we all have the time off from work, everyone comes to town from wherever they live, and we get to catch up and reminice.

Boy, oh boy...

Christmas is a pagan holiday, adopted by Christians. (Hence the name Christmas) It was never a Christian holiday to begin with. It's a winter festival celebrated by pagans... yes, pagans.

Where do you think Christmas trees come from? Do you think folks went around decorating all the pine trees in Bethlehem when Jesus was born?
