its not JULY 17, bro.,....
Liberty holds a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left. The tablet shows the inscription JULY IV MDCCLXXVI—July 4, 1776, the date of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
Liberty Enlightening the World, known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is a statue given to the United States by France in 1885, standing at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the Repoussé technique. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the U.S. worldwide,[1] and, in a more general sense, represents liberty and escape from oppression. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the Jet age, often the first glimpse of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe. In terms of visual impact, the Statue of Liberty appears to draw inspiration from il Sancarlone or the Colossus of Rhodes.

I can't believe all the ignorant answers listed here. The date shown is July IV, MDCCLXXVI and it doesn't show July 17 -- it shows July IV. For those who stayed awake in arithmetic class in elementary school, IV is the Roman numeral for 4, and MDCCLXXVI is the Roman numeral for 1776. July 4, 1776 is what is shown in the tablet held in the crook of the Statue of Liberty's left arm. Do I need to say that July 4, 1776 is the date the Declaration of Independence was signed? That date is considered to be the birthday of a new nation, the United States of America. (July 17, my hind foot.)

The Statue was completed in France in July, 1884 and arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885 on board the French frigate Isere.
This could be the reason.

No, it doesn't. It has the inscription July 4, 1776 ( in Roman Numerals) on her tablet. That, in case you didn't know, is the date our Declaration of Independence was adopted. (You DID know that, right?)
