All they seem to want to do is eat .. I find them quite disgusting. I was sitting in my car in a car park today watching them, and they were pecking at just about everything cigarette ash, etc.
Why do they seem to need to spend so much of their time eating and trying to acquire food?
They are nothing like Wrens and Robins and other birds... yucky... vermin rat things!
Also the argument about people feeding them all the time which is why they are always around food can't be that true. People put out bird feeding things for other "normal" birds and they don't go hanging around outside Mcdonalds trying to scavenge foods.
Yucky, yuck...

I am not questioning their "supposed" intelligence. I am asserting the fact that they are quite disgusting....

I just find them to be repulsive, disgusting and dirty creatures who serve no useful purpose in this world. I saw a pigeon fly straight into a car once.. and it exploded and I really am not exaggerating.. enough said!!

Because they are Rats wtih wings. I don't like them and think they are dirty creatures. I think they are a breed of their own and they always seem to be hungry as you say, and fly right at you. I was in Vencie last year and they have no sense of direction they just fly in your face. The other anoying thing is that people feed them! Why? Why do we need more pigeons flying around the world and getting in the way!? Ok moan over!

Most animals will eat as much food as they need and then stop. An exception is that group of animals that hibernate. Poigeons don't do that. They are originally cliff dwelling birds and living on sea cliffs has a certain benefit. the sea tides bring water in and that tends to wash away uneaten food scraps and poop. ,It's possible that the birds have evoved sloppy eating habits, because nature cleaned up after them. The birds are omnivores (i.e. they'll eat anything), and they are opportunists. They are not fussy about what they eat and they have the guts to cope with all kinds of food. They brred all year round and this may account for the females eating a lot to keep up with their high rate of reproduction. Stay away from their poop. There are some nasty fungi that live in it. (e.g. Cryptococcus neofromans, which causes cryptococcosis, a disease humans can contract, and also other diseases.). Wash it away, promptly.
If you see an accumulation of pigeon droppings, in a public place, call the city or health board and ask them to get it cleaned up as it is a health hazard. The poop's white component (ornithine), will eat into the paint and discolor it.permanently.
If you feed birds get mixed birdseed that does NOT have cracked corn in it. Pigeons love it. But will avoid bird seed that lacks it.
The wild pigeons are called mourning doves. They are handsome birds. But I agree with you the city variety are generally sloppy, quite ugly.and an eyesore.

Dan S is partly right. What you call "pigeons" are actually feral rock doves ("feral" meaning that they are descendants of domesticated birds that have returned to the wild). They're still accustomed to hanging around human habitations, though, which is why you see so many of them and why they're a nuisance. But for pure nastiness and damage to crops, etc., they're not even close to various species of blackbirds and grackles. And the reason you never see a "baby" pigeon is that they grow so fast that they're almost as large as mature birds by the time they leave the nest.

Homing pigeons are obviously intelligent. Could you be taken to somewhere you've never been before and find your way home with no problem. I've often seen little birds pecking at things, along side pigeons at the bus station. Take a look in the mirror, to find things that disgust you

I do not understand why you posted this question in Food & Drink...
after reading your detail of the question... ooops.. it is not a question...I guess you would never dry pigeon as food...
I like pigeon.. as food .... not those in the park (they are not tasty and as you said, they eat like rats) but we have some domestic ones (just like hens or geese or ducks), these pigeons are meaty and delicious for deep fried. Here is the recipe if you're interested to try.
