I used to hang out at this restaurant/bar where my friend waitressed and there was a regular there with tourette's. He had a ton of friends and the worst of the condition was the occasional, really loud 'boop'. I think if you allow it to be an influence on him, it will be. But if you just teach him that this is a part of who he is then he will have a better time adjusting with society.

And 'F' those that have problems with it.

Good luck to you and your son.

Navymilitarybrat, you just hit home with me. My sons father was diagnosed too young with chemical imbalance and put on meds at 15 years old. Then he tried to commit suicide for the first time. I think there is more of a relation between the meds and suicide then the condition, personally. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. i have been though almost the same thing.

And I apologize to those who think this is communication on Y!A, please do not 'report' me. She didn't have a link to contact her and I felt very strongly about sharing this with her.

I am not a health professional but I will tell you what I would do if he was my son.

Get as much information as you can about it, be as knowledgeable as any professional. Always be positive to him and tell him how special he is, he has Tourettes but so what? It could be worse. He will be first to experience how harsh and cruel the world can be but just talk him through it and tell him not everyone is like that.

There is no reason why he can't go on to do great things with his life as long as he has all the support from his family and friends throughout his growing years. He has to accept his condition to move forward. Make him strong, if you have a strong mind you can get through anything. Tourettes is not as taboo as it used to be but of course, with all things, you will always get ignorant uneducated people but that is life.

I wish him all the luck.

my late husband was diagnosed with the disease. he would have outbreaks just about anywhere, and would not realize or even be able to control his actions.

medication didn't control his symptoms. needless to say what would end up happening is docs put him on meds that made him sleep all the time, and if he didn't take the meds he just got worse.

we were only 2 1/2 years into our marriage, i tried to help him the best that i could. needless to say, he overdosed on the meds and took his own life while i was at work.

i later found out that most people diagnosed with this condition will be very suicidal. so this is something to keep in mind.

I am not a health professional but I did manage to find some sites that are professional to look this up in case you did not get any satisfactory answers on here. Good luck with this.

My friend's brother has it he's like 11 or 12
he has that face twitching thing
and he just blurts stuff out its like whatever thought crosses his mind he can't stop himself from saying it - he says like a whole bunch of innapropriate stuff - but I can't help but laugh at it sometimes -- One time at church in front of everybody he said "Mamma says my daddy is a sex machine!" ----- but like he can't go anywhere by himself like to a public restroom or anything because he just says things that will get him beat up --- ive heard everybodys cases aren't this severe though -----
former NBA player Muhhamed Abdul Rauf has it - u would always see him twitching in games

If you keep getting him treated for it then it should help him and it wont be so bad, depending how bad it is now.But most kids loose it if they are getting treated for it.
