Dogs love smelly things. They are a very smell-oriented breed. This is also why dogs often eat out of a kitty litter box. Cat poop smells awful, so they LOVE it.

Anything smelly: garbage, feces, tampons, other dogs, etc.

This is why dogs are always sniffing the air when you take them for a walk. Their sense of smell tells them a lot about the area.

If you want a good example, Dean Koontz (fiction writer) wrote a few chapters of one of his books from the point of view of a dog. I think he nailed it pretty well... read DRAGON TEARS if you're interested.

Hope this info helps. This is also why dogs almost always sniff people's crotches, male or female. We usually smell pretty potent down there, even if we showered recently...

Oh man! I hate that more than anything! I have been working with a basset hound (the 2nd most powerful nose on a dog in the world) that not only loves used sanitary napkins, but he would fight you for them if you try to take it away. IT is all about the smell!!!

They can't help themselves! When a female dog is in her heat she bleeds. There is something so tempting to a male dog about this whole female business that they will go out of their way to get the female products! Some dogs, with no manners will actually stick their noses where it doesn't belong and begin to hump female humans while on their cycle.

It is this incredible desire to procreate! The desire has to be strong, because in the wild they may have to find a mate over great distances or if they have a mate they may have to defend his breeding rights from other intrusive males.

It seems gross from a human prospective, but from a dogs prospective it is survival of the fitest!

Good Luck and Take Care

P.S. It is also difficult to potty train a dog once it has placed a urine scent in the home for this exact reason, urine to male dogs, especially, creates a boarder for their territory and tells a story.

Can't answer your question cos my 2 dogs have never offered any interest in them.
I have 2 males, only ones neutered.I use those things wrap in toilet paper and toss in trash can with no lid that's left where they could get to it if they wanted but don't.Occasionally they walk by and smell but never reach in after anything.
Only explanation I can think of is that my boys have always eaten from my hand. They eat what I put in their bowls but they get little tidbits all thru the day of whatever we're having.
I've also come to find that thankfully neither dog will eat anything offered to them by a stranger.
I'm not sure how I accomplished getting them to be so well behaved and wise but I'm sure glad they're the way they are.

I imagine it's the scent... Dogs have about 100 times the smelling capacity that people to. and like it or not everyone has a scent especially girls during their cycle there's a lot of hormores that are being released, not only that will attract dogs, but on some level will attract guys. I'm not saying anything. I don't pretend to be a Dr. or anything. but just that thats why dogs like them. not to mention Dogs were carnivores before they were domesticated, and that means their instincts draw them to blood even today when most dogfood is mostly vegitable with some meat by products thrown in.

Dogs are scent based animals and they love stuff that smells.
Even gross stinky stuff.
When the male marks territory by lifting his lee and peeing all the other dogs can tell by the smell of the urine that he is a male and his general health and his readiness to breed. They get much information from smell of things.
Mine love horse manure. It's gross but they love it. They just do strange things.

It has to do with the smell. Hormones are a big draw for the dogs. They also like shoes and underwear for the same reason. I know of dogs that are even drawn to licking underarms and between breasts.

You can't get around it. Their noses make them do it.

Man, I thought I was the only one whos dog ransacked the trash to find my used stuff. They also eat the crotches out of my underware. I put my bathroom trash can inside of the cabinet underneath of the sink. That way they cant get to it. And I empty it every evening to insure there is no funky smells in there

I don't know, but my dog always fished sanitary napkins and panty liners from the trash can; I either had to keep the bathroom door closed or the trash can on the counter!

They are drawn to that "feminine" scent. My dog will steal my dirty underwear from the hamper. GROSS.
It is just what they do. I think it reminds them a female dog...

My dogs have always liked stinky things like that. They're drawn to them. It's somehow their nature, but no one can explain it. Just know you're not alone....
