When somebody is engaged in selfstudy, after reading a complicated/technical text, how can one make sure that he or she had really grasped the material? What are the different ways? It is sometimes found that somebody confident about his or her knowledge later comes to realize that he or she only had a superficial knowledge. How to avoid this?

Having another person involved asa question and answer "bouncing board" can help. This person would either already be studying that same material or knows the material well.

Processing information is always the key element of true learning, so by engaging in Q &A with someone, or by taking self-study tests (that question the material that you are "supposed" to have assimilated"), you can be that much further ahead in your tudy of information.

It is always necessary to test understanding for all types of learning. Try the following ideas:
1. Summarize what's learned
2. Brainstorm ideas to apply the concept in real life (this may be harder for certain topics)
3. Find related problems from other resources to practice the concept learned

DISCUSS.
Discussions give u a wider scope of thinking - the other person can take a particular topic from a dimension tht u never even noticed...
Post ur understandings on net and share it with people, inviting responses from them - it would help.

Try to Apply what ever you have studied in real time situations.
By this you can ascertain your understanding & you can become strong in the concept.

Try to teach others what you learnt. One cannot teach a subject without understanding.
