read my answer to your second question...

dogs go for used tampons & pads because the smell is interesting. a human on her period smells vaguely similar to a female dog in heat, and they are interested to find out what's going on.

anything with a strong scent will attract a dog. even the unused pads or tampons, if there is any perfumes or scents in them.

humans gauge their environment with their eyes and ears. dogs mainly use their noses...

hope this helps

The best thing to do is to throw them out in a trash can that has a lid. If you live somewhere that uses a septic tank, flushing could be a really bad thing. I have city sewers, so I flush mine.

I've heard of dogs doing that before. Dogs like things that are completely gross. Keep in mind that the ancestors of dogs used to kill their prey and eat it raw. Bloody things may be like a "treat" to some dogs.

That's pretty gross, but let's remember that dogs can eat feces, and other bacteria-filled things without getting sick - they have stomachs of steel. Keep an eye on him if you're worried, but I think that the only real danger would have been if he'd managed to swallow it. If he did, I'm not sure what the warning signs would be...possibly vomiting, and acting out of sorts/uncomfortable. If that happens, then definitely consult a vet.

I am amazed that so many people are responding with the answer to flush them. DO NOT flush them. Hasn't everyone been taught that?

Anyways, I would recommend either thowing them in a garbage bag that isn't accessible to the dog. Or keep the bathroom door closed when its not being used so that your dog can not get in.

Well all these other answers are from rude people. Know that you are not alone. I have a tall trash can with a lid and my hound keeps pulling them out. I do not flush them because it screws up the sewers. I think that they do it because of the scent of hormones. Try getting some bitter apple spray and spray them down as you put them in the trash. My dog learned quick and now she never even tries for them because it reminds her of that horrible taste.lol

OH COME ON! Are you serious? A little common sense should tell you that used tampons are meant to be flushed or wrapped in toilet paper and put in the trash can. Unless you have used tampons layin around your house your dog shouldnt be chewin on them.

looks like people have given you good ways to stop this bad habit but no one has answered you question as to why.... Dogs are carnivors and like the taste of blood not to mention the NASTY smell of dead rotten or bloody things. So your tampons have what the dog likes odor and blood...Not sure if you can stop him from doing this other then the suggestions the others have made on here... Good luck!

This is entirely under your control. Buy a trash can with a lild or put it in the cabinet. Buy a baby-safe latch for the cabinet if your dog is smart enough to open the door to dumpster dive.

Sometimes the best training is prevention.

Flush them or throw them in a trash can that the dog can't get to!

He/She Smells the blood, and the dog is trying to get rid of it, it is being territorial. You ever notice when a perons it doent know comes over and he/she gets a little on edge, it is also being territorail. Just throw them away and the dog will stop.
