I know someone who has cerebral palsy. He is a very good person, but has no belief system and I know his life is much harder because none of his suffering makes sense to him. When I asked him if there was a reason he didn't believe in God, his response was "Look at me...." Could anyone recommend any books that might help? I'm looking for something I could give him to read, hoping that in the middle of darkness, he will reach for it and it will make sense of the suffering that I cannot explain to him. I've tried from every spiritual angle I can think of to present the idea of faith to him and he won't have it. If you don't have a suggestion for a book, please don't bother replying. I am looking for a specific answer to my specific question.

Hands down, I'd recommend the book, "The Gift of Pain: Why We Hurt & What We Can Do About It," by Paul Brand and Phil Yancey. Dr. Paul Brand, an orthopedic surgeon, and his wife (an opthalmologist) spent many years in India with leprosy patients. During that time, they identified the reasons why leprosy patients lose fingers, toes, noses, etc.; in the process, they also developed a keen understanding of God's purpose for leprosy patients and a deep understanding of their pain. Each and every leprosy victim asked the same question your friend has asked.

I won't give away the reasons, but I guarantee this book will give him a better insight into the reasons why this has happened to him -- and what role God played (and didn't play) in it all.

Peace.

Just because his body's broken doesn't mean his mind is! He has the right and the ability to come to conclusions all by himself.

Don't pester him. He knows you're Christian now. If he wants to talk further about it, he knows to come to you. Obviously he doesn't want to talk about it. So let him be!
