I have a cat that is in her first heat, and an uneutered male dog. I know they can't make babies, but, the dog is following my cat around like glue. Should I try to seperate them? Will a dog try to mate a cat?

Ok guys, thanks. As I stated, I KNOW they can't have babies. The cat we have only had for 3 weeks, previous owner did not spay her, she JUST now (probably because she is in heat) will come up to us due to previous neglect. My dog is not neutered because I will be studding him out as he is a pure bred. Thats just for all those that jumped on the too many animal band wagon, you don't have all the facts folks. Peronally, I'd chance one litter of cats, in order to take the time to get this cat to trust me before I try to fight it into a cage.

dogs are very much attracted to BAD smells. sooo, if hes not following her around to mate, then its for that reason... but even if the dog is to try to mate with your cat... if ur cats like the average cat, im sure the cat wont let him, actually, yea i would seperate them bc the cat might hurt the dog if he bothers her enough.

No they can't, but the dog might try. The genitals of a cat are about 1/100th the size of a dogs, so it ain't gonna happen.

It is imperative for animals to have matching pairs of chromosomes in order to mate successfully. Dogs have 39 pairs cats have 19 pairs

uh. no. they won't mate. Your dog is just fascinated by the new smell.

Don't bother them unless your cat is excessively disturbed by the attention.

As soon as she comes out of heat, get her spayed. She can go into heat every 14 days, and eventually she will come up pregnant. You DON'T want that!

Why is your dog not neutered? He should be done now..

They cannot mate. I do not know if your dog may try it though. I have never heard of this happening. If your dog is young, he may try, but I have always been told it is a different scent. A cat's scent while in heat should not excite your dog. He may be curious and following her around but supposedly he should not get excited.

He is interested in the unusual smell as it is different from the way she usually appears to him. He might try to mount her to show dominance, like a wolf would if a new wolf tried to enter the pack. Get the cat neutered to prevent problems.

Yes, the male dog may mount her, but believe me NO babies will result. No cat-dog suprises for you!

Their genetic material is not the same so they cant mate to make babies.. I am sure they will try to hump but thats another story..

Ask your vet. But I would have to say no your dog probably likes the scent.

He will try but will not succeed, especially when ur cat gets her claws stuck in.

i don't think it's possible for the cat to have his ---babies or whatever. he might try to hump her but that's just gross....try and separate them before they make a nasty show!
