When they were working on a name for their country they had so many arguments that they decided to pull letters out of a Scrabble bag. So the future prime-minister-to-be reaches in and starts pulling out letters and reading them off...C, eh? N, eh? D, eh?

The name Canada comes from a First Nations word, kanata, meaning "village" or "settlement". In 1535, inhabitants of the area near present-day Quebec City used the word to tell Jacques Cartier the way to the village of Stadacona. Cartier used the word 'Canada' to refer to not only that village, but the entire area subject to Donnacona, Chief at Stadacona; by 1547, maps began referring to this and the surrounding area as Canada.

Our country Canada first had the name Kanata.
Kanata was a Huron-Iroquois word for "village" or "settlement".
The village Kanata was then what is Quebec City today.
The name Canada later referred to the large settlement area north of the St. Lawrence River.
As settlers moved further west Canada grew.

In 1535, two Indian Youths told Jacques Cartier about the route to "kanata." They were referring to the village of Stadacona; "kanata" was simply the Huron-Iroquois word for "village" or "settlement." But for want of another name, Cartier used "Canada" to refer not only to Stadacona (the site of present day Quebec City), but also to the entire area subject to its chief, Donnacona. The name was soon applied to a much larger area: maps in 1547 designated everything north of the St. Lawrence River as "Canada."
