Like the human race, shouldn't we encourage mixed breeding with healthy parents, regardless of the type of dog?

Mixed breed dogs are likely to be healthier, however I think for some the draw with a purebred is that you are more likely to know the temperment of the dog that you are going to get, as with mixed breeds you don't know what traits they will get from there parents. I have had both pure breed and mixed I have loved them all the same.

It is a LIE that mutts are healthier than purebreds. How many mutts out of the pound have had their VwD, thyroid, OFA, CERTS, etc? Just because you do not test for it does not mean it does not have it.
If you have cancer, and you do not take a test to see, does that mean you are healthier than a person who tests for it, finds it, and treats it?
Purebred dogs show a higher percentage of these diseases because they are TESTED FOR THEM!!! They are spotted and eliminated from the breeding programs of RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS.

Now, back to the origional question. The breeds were developed over the CENTURIES to do specific things. They have a long and very detailed history. They are bred to a standard not only in looks, but in personality, health, temperment, etc. I, personally, do not like the personality of a terrier. I love the personality of the herding dogs. If you do not understand that, then you do not really understand dogs.

Go and do some research on each breed. Find out what is unique about them that sets them apart from all the others. You will begin to understand why people value their breeds so much. I have a perfect match with my guys and my family. I could not imagine not having them or having another breed.

Dog breeds have purpose, abilities and a "standard" personality. You start mixing breeds, you may not get the personality or abilities you want in a dog. Some breeds mix "well" with others while some are devastating (personality, health, obedience). Then there is the mixing of breeds that has taken hundreds of years for man to "perfect" for that particular breed. All is lost!

Face it, most mixed breeds are a result of unwanted breedings to begin with. Either strays, puppy mills, Amish or idiot owners not having their dog spayed/neutered. And then you have the modern idiot that's in it to make money. They figure if they breed their dog with a friends dog... then they start counting cash. It's not a matter of believing this, it's all fact.

In the end it comes down to what you're looking for in a dog. There are no reall bad dogs... just bad dog owners!

In humans... think of all of the culture that will eventually disappear if we were all the same... so I'm not a big fan of mixing races in humans either.

No we shouldn't because most people breeding "mixes" or mutts are irreputable breeders. They don't sell their dogs on spay/neuter contracts, they simply are selling the dogs for money, and they don't do health checks or guarantee their dogs. I am dealing with one of these individuals at the moment. She is trying to breed a Great Pyrenees/Newfoundland mix to a TOY POODLE. Do you think that's right? People are a different matter but I think people should be aware of the problems that they have that are genetic as well and not pass these along either. If you knew you were going to have a retarded kid, would you make it? I am convinced that the only place to get a good dog is from a show breeder. And the only people who show, have purebred dogs.
Edit: Mixes are NOT healthier. They usually have more problems because you double up on a problem in both breeds.

Some breeds are better for certain things..i.e. a hunting dog, a show dog, a small dog, a large protective dog. And while I admire all the breeds of dogs, I also appreciate the basic mutt variety. Some mutts (as they are called) can be excellent pets and protectors.

I agree! Through the years, the best, smartest, most loyal dogs I had in my life, were mixed breeds. Although certain breeds shouldn't mix because of their tempers. And the pure bred dogs I've had in my life, I made sure they were not inter-bred. Meaning brother & sister, or mother & son, ect. As an example, Pit bulls used to be great family dogs untill the idiots of the world started breeding them for fighting and hoping they would look just like another dog they had, ect. this is wrong and it is dangerous! Usually what happens when they breed relatives, is around a year to 2 years old, these dogs start acting nuts! They become really agressive, and Poof! there's a law suit in the making. But to breed a shepard & a labrador is cool, they are both smart and good with kids.
However, I don't suggest breeding a miniture poodle with a great Dane,,,,,you would end up with "Doodles" or
great Panes!

People see the prices of puppys and they think they can buy one for a pet and then use it to make money with.
They could care less if they have a dog that is of breeding quality or not the could care less what they even breed to or with.
Look at all the "designer puppys" now and the prices they get for them. If you want a mixed dog (most are better pets and healthier) adopt one from a rescue or shelter don't pay hundreds of dollars to someone for one. It just encourages them to breed more for the money.

Let me pose this question to you. The breeds that are out there now are just fine the way they are why do people have to go and mess it up? Poodles are a nice dog but can be quite timed and a shih tzu has this nice little personalty. So why do people have to mix a shih tzu with a poodle?? You end up with this dog that has a timed pesonatly and the do has ha cotten coat in alot of cases. Cotten coats mat up fast and need alot of bushing.

I have been raising purebreed dogs sice 98 and have been grooming dogs for people in my area for a few years now. So I see alot of those mixed bred dogs. Needles to say I see alot and can tell you why you should not mix them!

Depends on the breed. I have a Australian Shepard/ Lab. She is so cool, but confused. Australian Shepard are hearding dog, Labs are hunters, so she doesn't know weather to round them up or hunt them. I love her anyway. I also have a Shi-tzu her is my first baby.
