If you are friends with her, she pretty much knows or have a good idea of the type of person you are and what having a relationship with you may be like. She may also understand that by changing what she has now with you, to something more, also mean that it would be even harder to be friends should it not work out. So, what I think you should do is to let her know that you do care her and that you want her to be apart of your life. Notice I did not say the word love, because of the possibility of rejection. express to her that you cherish the friendship and that if the time spent with her were leads to something more, you would welcome that too.
As long as she knows this, in her heart, she will always know that she is loved.
This saves you the time and feeling of rejection and opens the door to the possibility that if she need the time to think on what you have just told her.
This is a tactic of a friend falling in love with a friend, because if it don't work, you still have a friend.
if you screw it up, then I'll have to explain to you, how to straighten it out.
Good luck and remember, she was a friend first and should be a friend if there is ever and end. But if what you feel is true, you will never see an end.

Be blunt, I had a crush on my bestfriend and he had a crush on me. I think we were shy to admit it, but we flirted alot. On his birthday day we decided that we were going to hook up. Anyway it didn't go according to plan, and we decided we will be better off friends. The problem was we knew to much about eachother.

Give her a funny/sweet hope you are feeling better card when she comes back and put a personal note in it saying you missed her, were worried, and that school wasn't the same without her being there.
then when she comes back -say "I'm glad you are back... things just weren't the same when you were gone..." and give her the card.

Just show that you are concerned and that you care. Tell her it was no fun without her around and that you missed her. ASk if there's anything you can do to help. Other than that be yourself she will probably be just as excited to see you as you are her.
