I think they prefer not to... their instict probably has told them about the coming rain before it actually drops. And, I think the ability to fly in the rain varies among different kinds of birds.

OF COURSE THEY FLY IN THE RAIN. THEY HAVN'T GOT THE BRAIN POWER TO THINK OOO MAYBE I WONT GO AS ITS RAINING. PERHAPS I'LL GO LATER WHEN IT CLEARS UP.. I DONT THINK SO. THEY GO FOR FOOD RAIN HAIL OR SHINE.. I HAD A LAUGH AT THIS ONE ANYWAY ....SOME OF THE ANSWERS ARE SOOOOO FUNNY.

[This was in the joke category but... yeah they do to find shelter, their oily feathers repel most of th rain water and since their bones are hollow, even where they collect some water it doesn't weigh them down much.]

I saw one fly during Hurricane Wilma last year.

I don't think he really meant to be flying,though.
I think he just didn't have a choice.

yes they put their pac-a-mac's on................ actually the bird that finds it difficult to fly in the rain is a BUSTARD when their feathers get wet
