Cos somehow there is an audience for everything and some failed clothes fashion designer has chosen the dog jewellery industry. Luckily for the designer, there are people with the same brain size as Paris Hilton who buy worthless pap for their dog hoping it will make 1) the dog look nicer (cos everyone loves a nice looking dog) and 2) the owner will look "totally cool".

Good luck with your dissertation. I'd struggle to read it seriously though if you put in pics of dogs with Elizabeth Duke necklaces hanging round them!!

All very interesting answers.

I have 2 sighthounds and out of necessity do I "dress" up my animals. My dogs are both thin skinned and get cold very easy. They wear coats to actually keep them warmer. Yes they have rain coats too that keep them try if we are going to be out in the rain. I know I do not like being all cold and wet, why would they? Add on top the wet dog smell..I can avoid by having them in their coats.

As for jewellery if you mean collars. My dogs do have mutilple collars for different events and locations. If you mean necklaces.
They do have those but then only wear them if they are in a talent show or other contest.

My dogs wear sunglasses or visor to keep the sun out of thier eyses for protection. With that said I also put sunscreen on my dogs to protect them from the sun they are very fair pink skinned.
They can get cancer the same as you and I from the sun.

Other then out of necessity my pets only wear outfits for shows or contests.
Ps I am not rich. I just care about the welfare of my pets.

I think that it is a statement that they are trying to put across to people that they have lots of money and can buy whatever they want so they spend their wealth on a poor defenceless animal that has no say in the matter, and it's down right cruel

I think it is very sad thing to do.
My neighbour brought a yellow rain and wellies for her dog, and I told her out right that it looked stupid.
She has 3 children.

I don't know what makes people do this to their pets. I have 6 cats and all that I put on them is a flee collar.

Extension of the owner - if dog looks good reflects well on owner. Showing off wealth. Seeking status/acceptance. artistic nature - an outlet. Very superficial. Maybe done for humourous effect

This is allegedly fashion, I always feel really sorry for those poor creatures, that are made to wear really stupid clothes. Dogs are wearing their own fur coat, so don't need any additional clothing. Even the bare breeds, such as cresteds and Chihuahuas don't need anything to keep them warm!!

Unfortunately, I've heard the term "accessory dog".

It's sad to think that some dogs are reduced to being fashion accessories, rather than being a "friend & companion".

Fashion addicts and slaves......those are the people who put jewellery on their dogs.

These people shouldn't have animals, treating them like little children they are degrading the animal. If they want something to dress up why not buy a barbie doll

In my case it was sheer competativeness- several people came back from a distant national draw contest with beaded necklaces on there dogs,(they sold them there). Many made a BIG deal about their dogs "beads" including one person I didn't like. Heck my dogs can have beads better than hers!

PS these are "hardbitten" field dogs!

Because they are stupid, simple minded, dont understand that an animal only wants love and isnt aware of external gratitude!
