It is an accronym that was created in England. It means Port Out Starboard Home. The Initials of this phrase would be stamped on the peoples luggage. The best cabins were on the port side when traveling to india because of the breeze. But on the way back to England it was the reverse on the starboard side. Only the rich could afford to have these very expensive cabins and thus the stamp saying POSH was taken over.

Hi!
It orginonates fomr the Victorian/Edwardian shipping lines. The side that the sun was on was the Port Side going out and the Starboard side going home so you became Port Out Starboard Home...or posh. These were often the most expensive seats on a ride hence the reason why posh became associated with rich people.
If however, you were poor/ at the bottom of the career ladder you were Starboard Out Port Home...so you could be SOPH as well as POSH!

Hi the word posh originates from Port Over Starboard Home. in ye olden days when people traveled by boat the upper class had cabins on the port side going to their destination and the starboard home as it had the best light and views.

It is NOT from Port Outward Starboard Home as was once believed - no PO tickets every carried this legend and it is been disproved time and time again - there is even a book which dispells the myth, the title of the book being Port Out, Starboard Home: And Other Language Myths by Michael Quinion - in it he investigates the myth and dispells once and for all that this was ever the origin of the word...it also gives a wealth of origins for other well known phrases and sayings

There are a number of possible origins but the one I like port out starboard home but it was because the sun was on the starboard side on the way out to India and therefore the port side was the coolest

The "port out, starboard home" meaning is unsubstantiated!!
another possibility is "posh" meaning "halfpenny" or generally "money", which may have come from Romany posh "half"
