Although you have not mentioned the style of the cupboards you have, the style you would like, or your budget, you do have loads of options.
To simply brighten the cupboards up, you can purchase 'cupboard makeover paint' from most good diy stores. Just follow the preparation instructions on the tin, and voila, instant 'new' cupboards.
To re-create a whole new look you could also replace the handles, again a good selection is available at most good diy stores.
For a complete revamp, you could add detail onto the face of the cupboards using self adhesive panelling or timber detail, then re-paint andadd new handles. Although this is the most expensive option, it will give you dramatid results
Good luck!

Hard to say without knowing what they are made of or what your decor is. You could replace the doors for about half the cost of new cabinets. Fresh coat of paint to match everything up and definately check out new hardware. There are so many beautiful choices these days.

Change the doors. This is a cheap solution, and changes the look to suit you. try a large B&Q. They have a few styles to chose from. Sale time is best.

Try Ronseal paint and grain - you can make them look wooden using this. My friend did this on old laminated doors and they came out looking great.

You don't need new units. Just doors. Buy the new doors and draw fronts. Should be all right, as long as your carcases are sound.

Sand, kilz, paint.
Add raised panels using trim work... gives a custom look.
DIY.net has great ideas, as does hgtv.com
