Hi.. i'm from a little country called Romania, so my native language is not english. I have a question about a part of a cooking stove. Please help. It's the upper part, that looks like a big straight metal sheet, and it's usually found in fast food restaurants, or any kind of restaurants really, and you can cook straight on it, like fry eggs or pancakes directly on the metal, and grill meat on it, but also use it to heat other pots and pans... I need to know what that is called (not the name of the company that makes it, just how people usually call it). Thank you so much!!

Guys, thank you so very much. First of all, i wanted to know how it's called for myself, cause i would really like one of those in my kitchen. And second, my sister, who is at work and was chatting with some people from the US, asked me how that thing is called, so she could tell them. I'm not sure why she was talking about cooking stuff, cause she works in PR, but .... Anyway, thank you all very very much.

a griddle. mmm...pancakes. i just woke up and could really go for some for breakfast

i usually consider a grill to have slats on it, and a griddle to be one solid piece of metal.

It is called a grill or griddle. What each individual calls it could possibly depend on what area the person is from. Around here most people call it a grill.

Just curious, why do you want to know? :) :)

It is called a griddle if it is a flat plate. It is a grill if it has raised ridges or slots in the top to allow fat to drip through to a removable tray.

I'd call it a griddle, but some might say it's a grill. Not much help but another opinion anyway!

It's called a griddle.

(It's not a grill - a grill has parallel raised steel pieces, from which you get "grill marks" on meat and such when you grill them...)

grill or griddle would be my best guess - my mom used to have an electric one so she could make tons of pancakes at once and feed an army!! You are lucky to have one built into your stove, they're generally pretty easy to clean too! Enjoy!
