She's only 42, she thinks Grandma sounds too old and Nanna sounds too common, any ideas?

Granny! Doesn't matter how old - its still the best one!!

you can reassure your mum that she'll be 44 before the kid is shouting it in the supermarket to get her attention!!

When my husband and I told our parents, they had the same problem, so we let them choose what the kids called them. It worked well, because they got to choose what didn't make them feel old.

We have a grammy ("Like the Award", my mother tells people), grampy, papa, granny(oh yes, my mother in law actually chose that one!), and a grandma and grandpa

My cousin calls her grandparents MiMi, and Papa, which I always thought were pretty good. I had a grandmother that I called nannie (i always thought that sounded too old), and I called my great-grandmother Sweetsie (not sure why I started calling her that, but I was the only one who was allowed to - everyone else had to call her Grandma or great-grandma).

Hope something here helps. Don't worry - if the baby calls her something else on its own when he/she can start talking, your mother will love it no matter what.

Good Luck.

What does she want to be called? I would not want to be called Grandma at that young age either. When you say grandma it sounds like you should be talking to a really old white haired lady.

We called my mother's mother "Grandmother" - not as old-lady sounding as Grandma, but it can be harder for kids to say (she got a lot of "Grandfuffer" and "Grandmuller"). Now that I'm expecting my first, that's what my mom wants the baby to call her.

My college tutor was a very trendy young grandma and she preferred the French word Mimi! I thought it was lovely - very easy for baby to say when he/she gets a bit older, and not 'ageist'.

My kids call one Nana and the other Nannie.

Her grandkids could call her
G-ma
Grammy
Mima (some mothers don't like that because it sounds too much like mama)

Or they could call her "Hey You".

One quick thing, in my opinion, a grandma wanting to be called anything else because of the way it sounds is just as bad as a mother not wanting to be called Mommy.

My youngest cousins call my grandma "Honey" because that is what grandpa calls her. Let mom pick a nick name she is comfortable with. I personally don't believe calling her by her first name is appropriate. I was raised to believe it was disrespectful to call an adult by their given name. She needs to establish that bond that belongs to her as a grandma. The children may feel a sense of rejection by not having a special name for your mom.

If she don't like Grandmother, Grannie etc............ How about " great old wise one". SILLY........ She sould be proud of being a grandparent. How many young couples can't make their parents Grandparents. More important things going on in the world today

I'm a gran and I love it, if your mum doesn't want to be called Gran or Grandma, then she should decide for herself what she would like to be known as.
