Someone once told me that before the great flood, things didn't ferment, so when Noah got drunk in his old age it's because they didn't have wine until then. How likely is it that this is true or based on some factual evidence?

The Chinese produced a fermented beverage from rice, honey and fruit as early as 9000 years ago. Around this time beer and wine were beginning to be produced in the Middle East. I've actually tried a modern drink that imitated the Chinese recipe as best as possible using what's known about it's history, at Dogfish Head Brewery in Delaware, and it was quite good

They have found evidence in ancient China and Greece, Rome and Egypt of distilled spirits that were crude froms of wine and brandy. The Egyptians also were the first to discover beer. So spirits have been around for thousands of years. An the story of Noah, getting drunk, yeah. Believe that if you want.
