The architect is basically the project manager for the entire process fo designing and constructing a building. The architect markets themselves/their firm, provides design per client's request, coordinates design of structural, mechanical, electrical, etc. designs with other subcontractors, provides complete finished set of drawings for bid by construction contractors, oversees construction, handles all communication between all involved professions in building the project, is in charge of all finances between client and all involved contractors, and a lot more.

Basically the architect is the team leader who has to deal with the client and also the many different people involved in the project, making sure to deliver a well-designed project on time and within budget.

It's a difficult job, but rewarding nonetheless.
