they both make a large line of cameras. there are many cybershots and powershot models to choose from, so you haven't provided sufficient information.

Both cameras are very good. Sony, perhaps a little better on electronics speed, Canon perhaps a bit better on image quality. But- both brands are top notch- however, you do pay for the name. Canon's and Sony's are (at least their good ones) some of the most expensive cameras in each of their classes. Companies like Panasonic and Fuji also make truly excellent and sometimes even better cameras for a lot less.

I would definately go with the Canon Powershot. I have owned both and believe the Canon to be my favorite. Sony is alright but it seems to faulter more than the Canon. Canon pictures seem better no matter what the lighting or condition and with the Sony you have to put a lot more work into making the right shots or adjusting the lighting, if you want the freshest clearest images with go with Canon.

My parents have the Canon - I find the interface is difficult to use and sometimes the pictures come out blurry when the camera is set to "auto"... unless you have time to fidget with the shutter speed, white balance etc, the pictures don't always turn out.

My boss just got the Sony - I love the large screen and the simple interface. I was actually thinking of getting one myself. He seemed to think that it was really good for point and shoot type situations. Make sure you get the one with the Carl Zeiss lens...

There was a review of the Canon in Wired this month... They said "Photos not very sharp. Pixel noise, even at low ISO settings. Movies recorded in massive, memory card-hogging AVI format."

Impossible to say as a general matter. Both Sony and Canon (and Nikon and Panasonic and Olympus and several others) make excellent cameras.

What particular things do you want to do with your camera?

i've never used a canon powershot, but i LOVE my sony cybershot! it was relatively cheap (under $300), takes great shots, and is very easy to use. i haven't had any issues with it, and you can buy accessories, like attachment lenses if you so desire. so i'm sorry i can't tell you which is better, but from a sony user, i've got no complaints on my camera.

My boyfriend has a Canon, I have a Sony Cybershot, and when compared, my Sony produces better picture quality. Crisp and clean.

I have found Canon cameras to be easy to use and have astounding image quality. My friend has a Sony Cyber-shot and the buttons are almost impossible for my small hands to press. Also, many of the pictures on the Cyber-shot turn out not to be in focus.

I would go with Canon, they make there own lenses, there own image processors and they have been in this business much longer than Sony.
