Teaching a child self-esteem automatically means teaching the child to esteem others. Balance is the key. If a child is taught they are the only one who matters, that isn't self esteem...it actually gives the child a false sense of entitlement and superiority to the rest of the orls.

On the other hand, teaching a child that the needs/wants/desires/expectations of others always take precendence over their own needs will teach the child that her/she is not worthwhile enough to take care of themselves.

Self-esteem is far more important. Esteem for others should be earned, and not simply respect, which is the default. That is, a child should learn to be respectful of others, even those who cannot be esteemed, just as good manners.

Definitely to respect the rights and be considerate of the feelings of others. Too many people go through life with abundant self-esteem and ride roughshod over everyone else without a care in the world.

It is important that we teach our children to have good self esteem. ALL children have considerably low self esteem, and as parents we should be helping our children gain good self esteem, good sportsmanship, manners, etc....I have an Autistic child and low self esteem is a normal trait and very difficult for him to overcome. I hope over time we will defeat his low self esteem.

Self-esteem...as a special educator it is very important for children to have confidence in themselves. I have a child in my class who is very intelligent, but has no self-esteem. Due to the lack of self-esteem it is hard for him to succeed on certain assignments. So I use lots of praise and acknowledgement to help boost his self-esteem. So I definately say to work on boosting your child's self-esteem and his/her self-esteem will reflect to others.

Self esteem is the foundation of character. Learning to love and respect yourself will help children love and respect others.
