We just make toast in the toaster, butter it while its hot and add a mix of cinnamon and sugar on top of that, again while the toast is still piping hot (this is key as you want the sugar/cinnamon to begin to melt). We buy the cinnamon/sugar mix which you can find in the seasoning aisle of your grocery store. But you can make your own at home by adding the two together at a strength you like.
I think if you are biting into granules, you are putting the topping on after the toast has cooled down.

You can also make cinnamon-sugar butter. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in whatever ratio you prefer (when I was a kid, my mom used something close to half/half). Then in a blender, mix the cinnamon/sugar with the butter.
I've never gotten the cinnamon or sugar to actually melt, especially as sugar doesn't melt -- it carmalizes. When I cook with cinnamon, it doesn't melt either.
But if you're biting into chunks of cinnamon, that probably means you aren't pre-mixing the sugar and cinnamon.
You'll need to butter the toast before you apply the cinnamon/sugar or else it'll come off when you try to butter it.

Cream your bread with margarine like you would if it was peanut butter, sprinkle a nice thick coat of sugar, enough so you can't see the margarine. Then sprinkle on the cinnamon. Oven preheated to 350, but put on the broil first, watch the toast, when the sugar starts to bubble, turn the oven off, leave about 4 minutes. The times depend mostly on your oven. It's trial and error on that, but I'm dead on with the amounts of sugar and margarine.

CINNAMON TOAST
2 slices bread
butter, for spreading
2 t. sugar
2 T. cinnamon
Toast the bread, & while hot immediately spread on the butter. Sprinkle the slices liberally with the sugar & cinnamon. Then pop it under a pre-heated broiler for just a few seconds, watching it closely, until the sugar has melted & is bubbly. The broiler will give you that "hard sugary glaze" that you want! Enjoy!!!
Yummy! My mouth is watering! Now, excuse me while I go make me some!

When I was a kid my mother would melt the butter in a sauce pan on the stove and mix in the cinnamon and sugar. Then she'd pour this over the toast.
I've done the same thing in the microwave, it works too.
