Yes, good question, I'm glad that you asked.Read the book of Acts and 1 Corinthians and find out that it is Biblical. This comes from the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is a usful prayer language that many people do not understand. I the 2nd chapter of Acts it was the sign that the Disciples were filled with the promised Holy Spirit.
It is not required to speak in Tongues but it is a way that you can pray for God's will when you do not know how to pray yourself. You just let the Holy Spirit pray through you.
Also notice that the people who are against this have no biblical basis except for slight references to thier interpretation of it. The scriptures say that it clearly is a spiritual gift that is to be desired(in 1 Corinthians 12 or 14 i forget) it is just a small gift of the Spirit but useful. Paul also clearly illustrates that you should be baptized in water and the spirit, like Jesus said(John 3:5
Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit", in Acts 19:
"3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?"
"John's baptism," they replied.
4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into [b] the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues [c] and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all".
My last point is that in Acts Chapter 2 when the disciples were baptized in the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues the people who were watching this thought that they were drunk even though it was only 9 o'clock in the morning. So were they "babbling" also by todays standards? Probably.

I can't limit what God can do, but it's pretty clear Biblical interpretation that tongues were known languages, just unknown to the speaker. Also believers are all given the gift of the Spirit, but all spiritual gifts are no given to every believer.
...There is no reason for anyone to speak except to converse intelligibly. The Greek word laleo means “I speak.” The word is never used for mere sound or noise. Nor is it used for a mere mumbling or muttering of unintelligible gibberish. The tongues-speaking in the New Testament was in the native languages of hearing people. The supernatural phenomenon which took place at Pentecost was the exercise of a gift whereby many people from many countries, gathered at Jerusalem, heard God’s message in their own language. This was indeed a miracle of God.
It would be an arbitrary and strange interpretation of Scripture that would make tongues-speaking in the New Testament anything other than known languages. There is no trace of Scriptural evidence that tongues were ever heard by anyone as incoherent, incomprehensible babbling.

There are gifts that God has given people and not all people will have the same exact gift. There is the gift of healing, or teaching etc. There are so very few that have the gift of speaking in tongues.
That was a gift that Jesus gave to His apostles as well as the ability to perform the miracles He performed before He was crucified and they rose from the dead and asended into heaven with His Fahter. There is also the gift of intreptetation as well. When you get a bunch of church members who act like they can speak in tongues, they are merely babbling and are not speaking in tongues. For that is not a gift that God gave all people.
2 Timothy 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness
1 Corinthians 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
1 Corinthians 14:27-28 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
For a vast group of church members to be " so called speaking in tongues" it's just plain stupid. They are trying to ack like someone they are not.

In the book of Acts, Paul talks about tongues. The way he is talking seems to me that there is a special language that some are given to speak directly to the Father. Because he says that not all understand that language, and it would be best to speak five words in languages that they understood then to speak the other. Not all people have that gift, but Paul had it. He described it as a language for God.
When I received the Holy Spirit, I use to talk with this strange language, I only used it to talk to the Heavenly Father.
In my old church when I mentioned this they said it was from satan, and I got scared and stop using it. Now I no longer have that special relationship I once had, I don't have that peace within that I use to have. I am now praying to the Father to please allow me to receive that once again, so that I can have that special relationship with Him that I once enjoyed.
That is why you have to be careful when getting advice from others, you get THEIR advice and not God's advice. We need to pray to the Father ourselves when we want advice on something and get HIS advice.
If it came from God then it is a gift from God, satan can't give us something that will make us have a peaceful, loving relationship with God.

People speak in many different tongues. If you are speaking of the spiritual gift, it is a way to communicate with God without the devil or anyone being able to interpret.
The devil has a tongue of his own that he will manifest among those who are in his hold.
It is very, very believable.

Christians seem to think that 'Speaking in Tongues' means that being 'filled with the holy spirit' (a delusion) causes one to babble incoherently. It is actually a kind of induced hysteria.
In the bible, the 'gift of tongues' meant that anyone could understand your speech, no matter what language they spoke. For example, someone who had the 'gift of tongues' could be speaking to a crowd in Greek, and people who DID NOT UNDERSTAND Greek would hear and understand the speaker as if he were speaking in their own language... just like the 'babblefish' in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Of course, just like the 'babblefish', this is pure horseshit. It was horseshit in biblical times... it is horseshit now.

It is something that was done around me when I was a small child. Made me feel creepy and like cracking up then, and now that I am grown up, STILL makes me feel that way, sorry. I do not deny that this is legit from God, but it says clearly, in the Bible, if there is one there who speaks in tounges, there will be some one there who will be able to understand and translate it.
