I know for sure that I'm not the smartest person in the world - not even close - but I also know there are a lot of people that are a lot stupider than me.
How do you deal with them on a daily basis (especially when one of them's your mother in law...OOPS! Did I say that???)

I hate nit-picky bullsh*t. If I used a wrong word - who cares? Does it make you feel better about your self to point out my faults?? Jeez....Get a life!

I try to ignore them. I have an oops brother in law like that and if we meet at a party I just say a friendly hello and then move on to someone I can stand to talk with.

Well to begin with "stupider" is not a word.....it should have been "more stupid"...but....
You need to accept the fact that you can only control your actions and the things you do. All these other people don't really count at the end of the day. And if you let their ignorance become your problem, then you are going to have trouble dealing with them. I just let them say their piece...and walk away knowing I didn't get drawn into the drama of their world. But as far as your mother-in-law goes..if you plan on staying married to her child...then at some point you need to come to terms with her. If you don't, then you are setting yourself up for a long hard road. If you accept that she is this way and is not going to change, and you don't live with her...so knowing that you get to go home and she won't be there, you should be able to tolerate her. Well, first you need to make absolutely sure you are in fact dealing with a stupid person, not someone pretending to be stupid. I don't count myself among the untermensch class on this site (err.. I am not a nazi either) but I do pose stupid questions every now and then because I like it when people, even the smarties, give a gut reaction. It's a good laugh.
But if you're sure enough that the stupid ignorant count you're dealing with is genuine, put him/her down. Blow them out of the water. Take their words, twist them back so they start making sense and spit it back in their faces. And if you're not so good ad-libbing in converstaion, make wee mental notes on the things you found most stupid, combine them, and collect your reactions on them so you can erupt one of these fine days - and see your mother in law disintegrate under a barrage of contempt.
