Unless you have been declared an "emancipated minor" by the court system and don't live at home, no. If you have a driver's license, you should already be on your parent's auto insurance because you might drive their vehicle. You can't enter into a contract to even buy your own vehicle until you are over 18 without parental permission.
So, no, the people telling you that you can are giving you wrong information.

It depends on the laws of the state where you live, and the insurance company. If both sell policies to owners of vehicle 18 and under, then you can get your own, but it will probably cost you more than just being a listed driver on your dad's policy.

Yes, it's true. You can. But it's MUCH cheaper to go under your father's policy. It will probably cost 4X as much on your own policy.
AND, if you're under 18, and living at home, someone you hit can STILL sue your father for any damages you cause.
