Why do you think people of religion are always asking why we Atheists are in this forum?
Everyday I see someone ask this question. They always say "If you don't believe, then why are you here?"
Do they see us as a threat? A disruption?
Why don't they want us here? Your opinions, please.

Gary, I'm here simply to see what makes people tick. As this particular forum will bring in all people from all walks of life, and allow them to enter into moral debates, this seemed the best place for me.

Melissa, please read what I said to Gary. I can't speak for everyone, but I stated the reason as to why I am here.

Phoenix....I happen to feel that anyone should be able to discuss anything anywhere. Total freedom of speech without censorship. There were no tactics involved, and I'm not wanting them to leave. I'm just asking what people's opinions are as to why they don't seem to want atheists in this forum.

You can ask questions wherever you want, I think we just wonder why if you aren't religious you come to the religion section. I don't go to the pet section and ask questions about cats, because I don't have any. I wouldn't go there and try to make people think having cat's is stupid.

I am not religious, but I am very spiritual. I have found that anyone who asks to many questions concerning their belief in their religion gets upset. I feel that it is do to you might actually make them think that they just might be wrong. If you are raised in a religion, you more than likely believe in it because that is all that you know. Most people don't like their faith challenged. I think you should spend time researching your religion, and really try to understand it. I studied religion for years and I still haven't figured out why I need another human to tell me what I should and shouldn't do. Hell I am an adult and I think I can figure out what it right and what it wrong. If you are an Atheist, and it works for you, I say great. If people would take the time to understand what they believe in and why, I don't think that they would be so threatened. Everyone is entitled to believe in what they want. I will say it again, most really don't understand what it is that they believe in or why. Also, when you are rock solid in your belief no one else is a threat.
Great question.

As to ppl who wish you to go away they probably feel this board is their board! It is, however, called Religion AND Spirituality. While Atheism, in my opinion, is not a religion it could be very much spiritual. You deserve, therefore, to be on this board as much as anyone else. I am a Christian but feel more spiritual than religious and that doesn't mean I don't have an answer that fits your Q. I would simply ignore those posts you chose to ignore and accept the ones you want to accept. If you don't get answers that help you with your Q then maybe posting on this board isn't the correct area. Just post the same Q in a more appropriate area you feel might be best.

Religion from Merriam-Webster Dictionary "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith"
So I ask (and PS I am Christian) can't simply stating yourself an Atheist put you into the category of religion? Therefore making it be perfectly sensible for you to be in this forum? But I also ask, if you don't agree (that being an Atheist gives you a sort of religion) then are you only here to argue our beliefs?

They do not recognize the inherent trouble created by unchecked religion (at least their own), or the need of the non-religious to protect themselves from the growth of dogma and intellectual failure. Many do not like having atheists here because they perceive atheists (and agnostics, etc.) as breaking the warm waters of canned discussion about their self chosen fantasy beliefs. When the beiefs being questioned are the ones used to give them solace in the world, it becomes a personal challenge.

hmmm, I think that a straight person in a homosexual forum would be unwelcome, or a hippy in a political forum would be unwelcome or a dog in a cat forum would be unwelcome.
We are Philosophers whereas they are Theologians.
At the end of the day everyone in the world worries about being judged by others... I think they may feel that if people who are atheist are present then it makes them more vulnerable and open to criticism.
p.s. I believe in a god but not religion. I love talking to everyone
from every faith and not-faith ;)
heres a slightly relevant story.
A friend, an atheist, argued with a christian that her god would not save her if she was to drink poison. The Christian argued that my friend was wrong. He told her to prove it... She died.

It's a bit of confusion caused by an over-blown sense of self-importance.
I've tried to tell them this is NOT a "Religion and Spirituality" section - but a Q&A forum ON THE SUBJECT OF ""Religion and Spirituality."
I also point out the category just below this one, where it says "Royalty." Do I have to be a Duke to post questions or answers there? Or have cancer to do the same in the "Health" section?

I think that religious people see atheist hanging out in religious areas as not true atheists. They see them as people standing close to the religious pool in case they need to jump in if they were wrong. Otherwise why be there? I think that may be part why. The other is I know athiest that simply are fascinated by the religious mentality and want to examine why people believe in God.
I personally believe in God and have deep studies of religions and belief systems for many years. However I tend to converse easier with atheist simply because their mind is not entirely closed to possibilities. They actually tend to be more freer mentally.

I've seen Atheist say the same thing. They say "How come Christians are on here shouldn't they be in mythology?" I personally could care less. But, there are some Atheist on here that are not trying to answer questions in a helpful way. Some are just here to get under our skin and put the worst possible answer just to offend.

I think it's that some atheists have been deliberately offensive.
And some Christians just don't like the idea of sharing their playground with others!
The fact that you state things that challenge their beliefs (as is your right, it's a good thing) could also bother them. They may have come here expecting that most people would feel as they did, but what a surprise they'd get!

The Fundies are scared of people in their flock gaining a little too much information for their own good.
The Fundies run a tight ship--kind of like Communist Russia, or Germany during the 3rd Reich. Nothing gets in or out without going through the propaganda machine first.
