A national database states that about 2% of priest have molested minors over the past 40 years. Since 1960 nearly 100,00 men have served as priest, that means that 2000 of them have molested children, many of them repeat offenders even after they were caught. It's safe to assume that all have not been caught. With this in mind would you allow your child to be in a situation where they could be alone with a priest keeping in mind that the parents of those that were molested probably thought they knew there messenger of God as well as you think you know yours?

Statistically more children are molested by their own fathers!!! When you look at the statistics, clergy (of any denomination) ranks low when compared to the number of children molested by Teachers, Doctors, Counselors, Bus Drivers, Fathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, Cousins, Brothers, and FOSTER HOMES--wow!! Take a look at Foster Homes if you want to be sick!

Child molesting is WRONG. The point is this: can you trust your child alone with anyone? You need to talk to your child about appropriate behavior and report anything suspicious. I am not a social worker but I personally know at least 10 children right off the top of my head who have been victims of molestation right in their own homes! One boy was sodomized by his brother. I know of an uncle who had oral sex with a 9 year old neice. It's wrong all the way around, but there's no money in suing a foster home, family member, teacher, etc........

I was an altar boy for several years. I was never touched in any inappropriate way.

I'm an atheist now, but my altar boy experience didn't have anything to do with that.

Child molestation isn't limited to priests by any means. Statistically, most child molestation is done by family members, and most of it is male/female.

I absolutely would allow my son to be an altar boy. I would also make sure he and I were open enough in communication and that I was involved in his church duties so I'd be cognizant of any behavior of the priest I found odd. But I definitely trust the 2 priests and bishop at my church

"Again, in terms of the overall molestation picture, the rates for clergy extracted from the database of newspaper stories are likely to be overstated relative to the general public, especially given their position of authority. So we also need a comparison group that is similarly educated and with ready access to children. Here, teachers naturally come to mind.

In the Academic Universe database, there were 251 teachers/principals/school counselors (all labeled as ‘teachers’ for this analysis) who had sex with their pupils or charges. Altogether, 11.6% of the 2,167 perpetrators in the news stories were teachers. Of these 251 teachers, 38.6% were men who engaged in homosexuality; these men had sex with 500 pupils (of whom 25 were girls). 54.6% of the teacher perpetrators engaged in heterosexuality, having sex with 334 pupils (19 female teachers had sex with 27 boys, 118 male teachers had sex with 307 girls). In addition, 17 teachers had sex with 26 pupils of unreported sex.

In this case, female teachers comprised 8.1% of the perpetrators whose sexual proclivities could be determined, but none of the homosexual teacher perpetrators. Overall teachers accounted for 15.2% of all child-rapes: ‘homosexual’ teachers accounted for 14.5% of all child-rapes by homosexuals and ‘heterosexual’ teachers accounted for 15.3% of all child rapes committed by heterosexuals."
