Because our older generation has already done their time and did it with honor. It's now our turn to follow in their large foot steps and hopefully make those who served before us proud.

There are certain errors in the question. I served 24 years in the military by choice and assuming you are speaking of the US there is no conscription. Some have already pointed out it ain't an all boys club anymore. I am currently on a forward operations base in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor and deal with some darn fine female soldiers daily. Perhaps it is more to the point to ask why is there war. The unfortunate answer is human nature and the foreign policy of nations and organizations other than nations (Al Queda) are but echos of our human natures. I work on systems that are purely defensive in nature, my efforts can only save lives. As a tired old warrior I like that. I would be even happier if the human race were to pull its head out of its rear and I could go home and never be shot at again. Until then folks like me will heed the call to defend their nations and neighbors. Please become informed and active in promoting an enlightened foreign policy in which war is the last option and all our wars are just. Exercise those freedoms we have been defending!

Nobody has to. Those who do have volunteered, huge difference. It is no longer just young men either, there are those in their 60's still wearing a uniform and commanding troops, strapping on rifles, and commanding air wings. There are women too or have you been hiding in a cave? Nobody has to do anything, then again if nobody was willing to fight for us we wouldn't be here asking this very question. We could talk about everything while others wish us harm. Maybe some other nation would step in and protect us from our enemies.
You know, you're right, the world is a perfect peaceful place. Everyone holding hands, singing songs, and dancing in the fields. We don't need a military, we don't need to protect ourselves. Don't you worry about something you will never step up to do. Just keep watching TV, chatting with your friends, and sleeping in your peaceful home (well your parents.)
If you really must know why some of us have gone off to war...
SELF PRESERVATION. I want my children to grow up free, I want my children to be safe from those who want us dead. I want my children to be able to have a country to call home. If we keep going the way we are today, we will have nothing. We fight so you can feel empowered. We fight so you can sit on your lazy asses contemplating what to wear. We fight so you can hang out with your friends protesting everything we do. We fight to make sure you have the right to have rights. Maybe we should all put our weapons down and let you do it for a change, then again I don't want my daughters wearing burkas.

Because young men are the fittest and strongest out of any other demographic group.
In the day of pulling a trigger women can fight now, but still when it gets to hand to hand combat, it is still in favour of the young man.
Goes back from the day where wars were fought with swords and sheilds and the strongest man won the fight.
Also goes back even furthur than that, men are supposed to be the protectors, and women are supposed to look after the children. Now i dont really care if you women find that offensive but thats how it used to be and men evolved to do their job good and women evolved to do their job good.
Men fight, women give birth to more children so they grow up to be men to fight.
Edit: It is funny how you have the word War and the US is mentioned by someone, all the time.

because unfortunately, if a certain group of ppl have to be forced to go to war to protect the country. The young men are the strongest, youthful...est and best chance of helping our side win. If women were as strong as men, it would just be young ppl in general going off to war i guess.

War is a political tool. Young men and women in the US volunteer to be the enforcer of policy when diplomacy and political correctness fail.
Sometimes you have to ask in a manner that others understand.

They really don't have to. They could sit at home and wait for the war to come to them.

Because they are ignorant and innocent. It is true that some people do it by choice in their later years. But what is their percentage? I bet its much lesser compared to that leave after the first contract. Does anyone know the percentage of the soldiers retained after their first assignment in US Military? Perhaps a comparison of figures before and after Iraq conflict might show if US military is REALLY with Bush or not.

Because men have not learn how not to go to war.
That is the only way they know how to settle their differences is by getting young men killed and still it settles nothing.
It just get young men killed.
I think that the president it he wants to go to war so bad needs to be right their along the side of those who he is sending out to battle.
Be willing to die for what he is sending them out there for.
They would not be so eger to go to war if this were the case what do you think?
