I went over to my moms house this morning and my dog started crying when I picked her up. I then held her like a baby and noticed she was bleeding out her rear-end. I took her to the vet and the vet told my mom that her "anal gland abcessed and ruptured" so they are putting her on antibiotics but how does this happen and how can prevent we prevent it... I have had pets (dogs, horses, cats, etc) since I was little. This has never happend to any of our other animals nor to the other shih-tuz...

This is something you are going to have to regularly get done..The anal glands fill up and some dogs cannot empty them by themselves, which causes them to rupture from too much liquid..If the glands are cleaned out on a regular basis, you won't have this problem. Of course right now you will want to let it heal but please make it a habit to take your little dog to the vet or groomer to have this done if you don't want to learn how...It is an awful smell and a slightly messy job..

My little toy collie mix started to have problems with her anal glands. The vet expressed them and said that she would need this done every 8 wks or so from now on.
She is 50 lbs and I started giving her a Metamucil capsule every day. The increased fiber made her stools larger and she hasn't had a problem since. Her anal glands are emptied naturally.

Im gonna have to agree with KAZZ, my sister-in-law works in a animal hospital and she has her own set of animals as well, but this one particular dog she has, its a boxer mixed with something else, cant seem to remember right off top of my head, but she has to squeeze his rear glands when it gets swollen. Its one of the nastiest things i've ever seen or smelled. But i am sorry about your dog, atleast its still alive, I just lost my puppy. She was a mix too, She was half pick- a - knees...(lol...sorry for the breakdown of the word, dont seem to spell it correctly) and half chihuahua. She was ranned over while I was away on vacation. I left my neighbor in care of my dog and thats what i came home too, so you know this is not over until I say its over. But anyways good luck with yours.

Im not sure of the term for this but I have a shih-tzu X and occasionally he seems to have problems deficating and his rear end looks like its swollen I take him to the vets and he needs to have the glands massaged to release (pus or what ever it is) the vet told me he was happy to show me how to do it but to be honest its not something I want to do so im happy to pay him to do it - its not a condition just for shih-tzus as I have a friend with a miniture gray hound and he has the same problem.

If it happens again... have her anal glands taken out. These glands can become impacted and if not "cleaned", they can rupture. Your vet can show you where to squeeze to "clean" the glands if it happens again but if they rupture... lose em!

the obtrusive first answer is to touch your interior sight shelters and pounds; additionally, google "Shih Tzu rescue businesses". Shih Tzu's are an extremely properly-known (a minimum of in Texas) breed, and a rescue league could place him in a sturdy abode. although, you besides mght could prefer to sell him. they are costly canines, and could be common to sell. that would enable you to "demonstrate screen" potential new proprietors and be attentive to you have gotten him a sturdy abode, plus recoup a number of your person costs. And, between the biggest sturdy factors approximately it extremely is that client's are growing to be to be an grownup puppy and not could desire to bypass by the "domestic dog" section. (in case you have been in Texas, i could truthfully call you up!) you are able to make some flyers, perhaps with a image, and submit them around on interior sight commercial boards (like at faculties, house complexes, and vet places of work - anyplace you will get permission). additionally, place a loose advert in interior sight prefer classified ads classes (eco-friendly Sheet, The Peddler, Penny classified ads, and so on., examples). there is often Craig's record (which i do no longer probably recommend). in the journey that your circumstances enable and you have time, you will sell him extremely. purely be careful assembly strangers, in on your place, or assembly strangers at some interior sight parking zone, and so on. purely be careful all the way around, on your person protection, and that some illicit "domestic dog-mill" human beings are not getting him. you're a in charge puppy proprietor to attempt to confirm he get's a sturdy abode. Kudos to you! desire the impressive for you. :o} .
