You agreed to it when you signed the insurance policy.
You now know why insurance is such a rip off in this country and why the insurance companies are so rich

Wow that's steep!! You can't get it back from the insurance company. Sometimes there is a voluntary excess and a compulsory excess. See what your policy says. Chances are it is compulsory.
In the future, the only way to pay a smaller excess is to sign up to a higher monthly or annual premium in the first place.
Life is just not fair unless you own an insurance company. I only hope your car is worth more than your excess!!

I don't think so, I'm assuming the reason you put the £200 excess on the insurance was because it would make the annual payment cheaper? That's the rub. You have to pay the first £200 of it.

You can take the person who vandalised your car to the small claims court to get the money back, but you cant get it back from your insurance company.

Your first answer is absolutely correct.
The excess is a condition of your contract.
The only way to recover this is in a situation where you can identify and successfully claim from the other party - whether it is another motorist or an idiotic vandal.

It sounds like you had to pay what is called a deductible in America. If you know who was responsible and car reasonable prove it, you can have your insurance company recover that money from them. Unfortunately, with vandalism proving responsibility is difficult and chances are you won't recover the money.
