if you are an athiest, why do you post in the religion section at all. If you are not interest, or don't believe, what does it matter if we do? Why not leave us to our "fairy tale" as it is refered? I don't really need answers, I just wanted to put that out there.

I'm not an atheist, but I am agnostic, and I do read the questions in this section because I like to see how other people view things. I've never posted here either, but if I ever did I would hope you would consider it equally with 'believers'.

Because the US has a distinct tendency toward theocracy. Ever hear of blue laws? How about the factthat 7 states in the US still have laws prohibiting atheists from holding public office? How about federal money in the US being given to organizations that bar atheists (such as the Boy Scouts)? Soon to be president George H W Bush (41st pres) actually said he does not believe atheists should be considered patriots or citizens! (Chicago, 1987). Although I am neither theistic nor atheistic, I can see how atheists have a vested interest to be where the religious gather and defend themselves and rational thought.

Kjelstad gave me a great answer the other day. I'll post it here if they don't show up.

Ok screw it, I'm posting it anyway.

"I am always learning about religions, but here it is a lot of arguing. I would say I do learn from a few people on here, religious or not. Mostly not.

Why am I here? Why do atheists talk so much about God if they don't believe in Him? Atheists in the USA talk about god and religion so much because of the profound impact religion has on them. religion is in our face everywhere we go. Everywhere the religious are attempting barbaric takeovers in an attempt to strip us of our rights. Everywhere in the USA there are Christians trying to destroy the wall between church and state. Christians trying to make belief in god a requirement and the rules of the bible our laws. Christians forget that the last time the church and state were one is referred to as The Dark Ages. It is a major concern. Christians trying to ban the teaching of evolution in schools. Christians trying to force religion on our children. Christians burning books. Christians showing up at gay funerals with signs that read "God hates fags". Christians shooting abortion doctors and blowing up clinics. Christians (Pat Robertson for one) grouping us morally with child molesters, murderers, and thieves. Christians like Former President George Bush saying we're not even citizens. Christians everywhere are in an all out attack to destroy us and they have the audacity to think we would not be concerned? Atheists do not go knocking on doors telling Christians that they are stupid and they're going to hell and how sorry we feel for them. Atheists don't tell Christians what to think and what to believe in. The Christians fundies claim they are being assaulted by us, yet they are the ones who do all the assaulting."

It is not the "religion" section; it is the "religion and spirituality" section. A person can be an atheist and still be spiritual.

Moreover, the idea is to learn about a variety of beliefs. No one will convert me here, but I have definitely expanded my horizons by reading answers, and being referred to fascinating websites. I have learned a great deal about alternate faiths and I am glad.

Fits the bill.... try and read again.... there are TWO, yes, count them ONE, TWO words that comprise the name of this category.... but what can we expect from people that only believe in 'The Word'?

Religion & (<---notice that one?) Spirituality......

So while atheists might not be religious, albeit some people claim it is just another religion, their point of view might be considered spiritual....

If you do not like this line of argument.... try the one of the basic ideas that this country was founded upon... free speech.... if you diametrically oppose my point of view, I have a direct interest in your arguments... where would we be, if we left each group in a 'forum' by themselves, without adding opposition?

I am not an atheist, I am a Christian; but allow me to make this comment to your question. We (mankind) are a 'god' (albeit a false god; Gen. 3:5&6). Therefore, the 'atheist' is simply argueing about whether a supernatural (fairy tale) god (other than self) exists.

This question has been asked and answered a thousand times already. Look it up!

And if you don't actually want answers, why are you asking a question? This isn't a forum for ..... well, for anything but questions!

So I'll counter with - how come "all" you christians keep asking all of us atheists how come we're always asking questions out here? Why do you "all" christians believe this section is a forum for your preaching"

and I have to follow Mr. copy and paste....

This has been said over and over but this is the religion AND SPIRITUALITY section.

just because I don't believe that some invisible entity is guiding the lives of everyone on our beloved rock doesn't mean I can't be spiritual...

I also provide guidance to anyone who is looking to examine their faith (as I once did) and decide for themselves if they walk down the path to atheism (as I did) or decide to remain a theist.

When you are not secure with your spiritual foundations then you try to valadate your beliefs anyway you can. Kind of like trying to wish it into reality. But your beliefs never quit sit right so you tweek it and tweek it but you are still empty.

The reasom I know this?
I was an Atheist for 30 years.
