Serving under Napoleon in Russia in 1812 would not have done the average Grunts any health favours, although being a German in Stalingrad was about on par with that. Nearly 295,000 German troops were in Stalingrad, and only 5,000 ever came home. Not a nice day out.

I'd have to say Hitler in Russia. It started the decline that actually led to his army's demise. France recovered far more quickly as did the US after Vietnam. Germany's army has never fully recovered. I guess the jury is still out for the US army after the Iraq fiasco finally ends.

I would have to say Napoleon's army. They were fighting a losing battle in the Russia winter. The troops were overrun with disease. Faced with the prospect that he was losing, Napoleon deserted his army to their fate, and fled back to Paris to try and save his reputation. Most of the troops were captured, killed, or died of disease. That anyone would fight for this man again was a testament to his charisma. A close second would have been the German troops in World War II faced with almost the same dilemma in Russia.
Moral of the story: Don't try to invade Russia in the winter.

Your question is vague. What IS detrimental to the long term health of an army is lack of support for the mission at home. Monday morning quarterbacks, political correctness, concerns for enemy civil rights, are just some examples. The military leaders need freedom to fight to win and not be micro managed.

Hitler's army in Russia, he stopped sending supplies months before the wars end so no food or ammunition for the soldiers. It was freezing cold and people died from frostbite, also they were captured by russian soldiers who hated the nazis.

specific Iraq conflict is worse than Vietnam conflict in a single sense u . s . a . of america can no longer bypass away Iraq like it did in Vietnam. Iraq conflict is an Israeli foyer conflict and the subsequent conflict would be Iran conflict and so on.

Bush is betraying the American military by ordering it to do an "adventure" which is illegal and immoral. By refusing to listen to military people that had experience he put them into a situation where they are caught in the middle. A betrayed, professional military will have dire consequences in the near future.
