Tony owns a T.V shop, his nephew adam and his 2 friends enter and buy a T.V costing £30. Tony actually sells the T.V for £25 to his nephew adam, who now thinks he can make a quid or 2 from telling his frinds he got a smaller deal that he actually has got. So from the £5 left over he gives.. himself and his 2 friends £1 each back, and pockets the other £2, well that means that the 3 friends have paid £9 each with adam pocketing £2.. Well my maths aint to good, but 3 x £9 = £27 + the pocketed £2 = £29,
So where has the other £1 gone???

Three people paid a total of £25 pounds, so that each paid £8.33 not £9. 8.33 x 3 = £25 + £3 +£2 = £30.

You subtract the two from the 27 to get the cost of the TV, 25, because it doesn't count toward the cost of the TV, it's what was given back. Then with the money given back to each of them plus the two again, you can count it now, because you are counting what is left over. you get 30.

error: he paid #25, and not #27..he lied he bought for #27... with the #5 left he shares #3 amonst themselves and keeps #2... there's no extra, you are combining his lies in your calculation thats why your answer of #1 extra is also a lie...chuckle... gotcha
the real calculation is #(25+3+2) = #30

A teacher of mine put this to our class in college. We racked our brains for ages trying to come up with an answer before someone finally cracked the 'solution'; the question itself is flawed - it's mathematically impossible. It's phrased in such a way that there's no correct answer.

They paid £9.00 each making £27.00.
However the £27.00 is used to pay for the £25.00 TV, and the £2.00 in pocket.
QED.
