My husband was sworn into the Army National Guard on Monday. We've been on this roller coaster for about a year now. He was considering active Army then he took a break from the military for a while then he decided to check out the National Guard. My brother is in the Guard as well. I'm proud of him but at the same time I'm not ready for him to leave us for that long. He's going to leave for basic training in two weeks. What happens now? Anyone else a military spouse? How did you deal with this? He's leaving so soon! I don't know...I guess I'm just a little cautious with him leaving so soon! What do you think?

Well, I can tell you about my situation. My husband is an active duty Army soldier. He left at the end of June to start his BCT. He ended up being in reception for almost two weeks before they took him over to start his training (busy time of year). So he has been gone longer than someone normally would. I got to see him September 7,8,9, and 10th during the weekend he graduated Basic Training, but I had to drive all the way from Iowa to Oklahoma with our 7 month old! The only reason I got to see him for those extra two days is because he is doing his AIT and BCT at the same base.
So right now he is doing his AIT, only been at it a week, and we still have five more weeks to go. It's pretty hard, especially with the baby, but I'm proud of him for doing so well and just plain doing what he's doing. He just told me last night that our first duty station is Fort Lewis, WA and we'll be there at the end of November.
It is hard while they are gone. He could only call once a week during BCT. It seemed like every day that went by that I didn't hear from him, I would just get more and more depressed. But it will make or break your relationship, depending on how you go at it. My husband and I's relationship is stronger because of it because we are both being positive and supporting each other through all of it. Even though I get worried and stressed out and tired from having to do the work of two parents with a 7 month old, I don't tell him all that because I know it's hard for him too. Our lives will be better because of what he's doing. It just sucks right now because we can't be with each other.
Anyway, I don't know what it is like exactly for wives of NG soldiers. It might be a little easier, do you have to relocate? How often will he have to leave when his training is done?
Just remember to keep your head up, keep yourself busy, and stay positive and time may move at a pace faster than "just crawling by"! Good luck to you and your husband!

No one is ever ready to be parted from a signifcant other or family member in this way. Try talking to some of the local military wives for advice on how to handle this. They have lots of experience. Desert Storm Vet's Sister.
