There are three main strategies for curing depression

(1) talk therapies (psychotherapy)
(2) drug therapies (antidepressant medication)
(3) shock therapy (electro convulsive shock)

You can use all three or combine two or use one only ... but the things that work most are the psychotherapy and the shock therapy.

The trouble with depression is that negative thoughts can change the biochemistry of the brain and generate more negative thoughts.

You can try drug therapy alone, but if the depression is strong enough the negative thoughts can continue the biochemical change despite the drugs. The drug therapy is slower anyway.

Psychotherapy addresses the negative thoughts directly. If you can provide positive thoughts and change the brain biochemistry back to normal then you are well on your way to being cured. Please be aware that psychotherapy is much harder work than "just thinking happy thoughts" because if you know the happy thoughts are a facade and are empty of meaning, you will be more negative and depressed. This is one of the reasons why people do not like the psychotherapy. It is hard work and they are not inclined to do it. They just want a pill to "fix them".

Shock therapy is also more effective than antidepressant medications, but it is reserved for severe depression. These people with severe depression are so depressed that they can become catatonic. It can be impossible to use psychotherapy with people who are this depressed, or if there is associated psychosis (one patient of mine firmly believed that she was dead despite the fact she was still talking and breathing).

Witness a humbling moment .....
A horrific accident, an awe inspiring view of the universe, a sleeping baby, an old man struggling to get on to a bus, a simple farmer, river side view of sunset, do something that tires you physically (run , excercise .. not anything which hurts anyone please).. listen to music,.. drive a long way .. go far far away a meet a good friend and have dinner with him/her... spend money on something you like ! Tire yourself by depriving yourself of sleep , food , talk , thoughts ...
try and do this as much as you can ... as a backlash, you will be back to extreme indulgence in all of the above ...
Most importantly .... do something fast .. anything please ..... because the "acutest" (aargh!) depression is finding no purpose of doing anything at all ....
And yes , you cannot be depressed forever, you cannot be happy forever either .. you oscillate between the extremes!

(It's not something you cure like a headache rather a symptom of what's going on in your life)

Also something that can be just as powerful is helping others in a meaningful way.
Assisting a charity, community group or emergency service group (Not For Money).

-: When you are called on to act, regardless of whats going on with yourself, to make a difference in the lives of others, (Or even with a friend or aquaintence) it makes the biggest Positive impact on Depression.

* Exercize!!!
* Pray!!!
* Avoid alcohol – particularly in excess.
* Don't smoke – it starves the tissues and brain of oxygen and causes lethargy.
* Eat a healthy diet designed to give you plenty of energy.
* Take regular aerobic exercise. A brisk walk is usually sufficient.
* Give yourself time to rest.
* Get involved in some project which will 'take you out of yourself'.
* Stop talking/thinking about depression and concentrate on doing things instead.
* Keep your mind active. Try enrolling in a night class to boost concentration. Even reading the newspaper or doing crosswords will help.
* Write goals – even little ones and praise yourself for their achievement.
* If you can't sleep get up and do something. You'll sleep when you're tired enough. It's important not to ruminate on depressive thoughts.
* However tempted you may be avoid using determinism as an excuse for depression.
* Study assertiveness and anxiety management.
* If necessary visit the doctor.
* Avoid comfort eating – you'll only get more depressed every time you look in the mirror.
* Helping others is often a good way to boost self esteem and distract yourself from your own problems.
* Understand the difference between a problem and a fact.
* Resolve to make the best of every situation.
* Adopt happy physiology – stand straight, move quickly, smile. Remember the mind and body are linked and changing the way you act will affect your mood – and quickly too. Try it, you may be surprised.
* Stop talking about how bad things are and start planning to make them better – remember you're responsible for how you feel. What are you going to do about it?
* Always remember that if you're waiting for someone else to come along and 'fix' you nothing will ever change. You have to do most of the work yourself.
* Take action to lift your mood every day – and give yourself praise for doing so. Your self-esteem needs the boost.
* Become an 'inverse paranoid'. Expect good things to happen to you every day. They will.
* Use affirmations regularly.
* Count your blessings – write down and talk about all the things you're grateful for in your life regularly. Thank people who've been nice to you.
* Don't expect too much from others. Remember nobody gets their own way all of the time.
* Never give up.
