I either pinched a nerve or pulled a muscle riding horses. I've been in and out of the hospital, and it takes forever to get in to see the doctor. It's virtually impossible. Well, it's getting better, bet only very slowly. Can anyone suggest something to do to get rid of the pain? I tried drinking, but six margaritas didn't do it, and my husband had to help me stumble up the stairs. Help!

I'm serious... go to a real Chinese accupunturist. I know quite a few people who have even been cured of things, muscle and nerve wise, that Western medicine couldn't fix even though they were given operations and pain medicine.

I am a Neuromuscular Therapist.

Pain killers and muscle relaxants will have little or no affect and do nothing to correct muscles that are in spasm. Your Margarita approach, although probably fun, has made things worse by dehydrating your muscles and irritating the nerves. You do not have a pinched nerve. This seems to be the default diagnosis for everything from headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome to back aches. If you had a true pinched nerve (which physiologically cannot happen anyway) you'd be immobilized by excruciating pain.

Here are my suggestions:
Soak in a hot bath, spa or use moist heat packs on the affected areas. If you have inflammation, apply ice. With either method, apply 15 min. on, 15 min. off, repeat as necessary until the pain has diminished.

The most effective solution is to directly treat the source of the pain- tight muscles. Get a deep tissue massage or a session of Neuromuscular Therapy. A skilled therapist will be able to release the spasm, increase blood flow to the muscles and reduce the irritation to the nerves in the sore area.

Self-stretching is also a good idea. Describing the many stretches you should do for back pain is impracticle. Books I recommend are:
"Stretch and Strengthen", by Judy Alter.
"Facillitated Stretching", by McAtee/Charland
"Stretching", by Bob Anderson.

Riding horses, or any other mild activity, should not result in this kind of muscle pain. You most likely have many muscles that are on the verge of spasm all the time and it takes very little to push them over the edge and into pain. I'd recommend starting a regular routine of stretching and/or massage therapy in order to keep you healthy and avoid similar episodes in the future. Neglecting tight muscles will only cause more frequent and serious problems in the future.

Hope this helps.

Drink lots of water, take an anti-inflammatory, use something like Tiger Balm liniment on the muscle, and rest.

People on here probably hate me, but get some painkillers. Vicodin's are hard to find without a script, Darvocet a little easier, Tramadol you can order off websites just by filling out a questionairre. Very nice drug.

see if your doctor will prescribe you a muscle relaxer such as flexeril
you could also try putting something such as aspercreme or icy hot on your back
or using something as simple as a heating pad on your back
