This week's favorite painting is 'The Empire of Lights' by Rene Magritte. At first glance there is nothing special about it but then we notice there is something not quite right about it... it is night on the buildings but with a daytime sky. For me it wraps the philosophy of surrealism this scene can only be found in dreams.

The composition is almost symmetrical lots of vertical lines to give stability, formality and elegance with one single focal point (the street lamp) to the center and 2/3 down vertically the visual elements shouldn't create any tension but the tall tree takes our eyes back to the sky and that is where we as spectators create the tension because our conscious mind finds it difficult to accept that night and day can happen at the same time.

The Last Supper as seen in the Santa Maria in Milan. Absolutely stunning in detail and dramatic effect. It is also, regardless of recent discussions around the book and movie, a powerful display of one person's view of religious history.

"Impression: Sunrise", 1872 by Claude Monet. The finest work of art that officially launched the modern movement.
