I was serving an older European looking lady a drink the other day. She had an accent so I asked where she was from. She said America. I said but your accent? She said I've been here so long I forgot where I'm from. Then she winked at me. She looked so cute when she said it she is now one of my favorite guests. Not saying that people should forget where they come from. Just saying if you want to be a citizen then you need to appreciate America. Not come and burn the flag and demand us to change our laws. If you don't do that you are cool in my book. if you don't appreciate America then why come here and disrespect?

I agree. If you want to live free and enjoy what this country has to offer, then you should respect your fellow man and country. If you don't appreciate what this country affords you, and you refuse to respect it...I know a few very nice Communist Dictatorships that would love to put you in one of their prisons, and teach you all about respect!

I agree that immigrants should learn the language but i don't agree that they should forget their roots.Because its in your roots that you find yourself. My parents came from mexico not europe so why should I be something I am not?I mean the native americans still keep their cultures and aren't asked to be more "american",so why should others be forced into it?And respect is always earned and we learn it from others. So how can you say you want immigrants to respect the flag and the laws when they see everyone else disrespecting it.I mean I have seen everything from american citizens burning the american flags in protest against the Iraq war to women wearing thongs with the american flag pattern. Now I want to know in what other countries is that possible, because as far as I know in the rest of the countries there are laws that protect the countries' flags, and prohibit them from being displayed on clothes or hats, and only may be displayed at embassies. So yeah maybe instead of seeing what others do,you should see what your own fellow americans do.

I agree with you. Although, I also believe that we have a right as American citizens to burn the flag and voice our opinions. Those damn amendments! However anyone who would burn an american flag on american soil lacks taste and class. Alot of immigrants appreciate America more than natural born citizens.Usually because they come from a much worse place. America is a land of opportunity for immigrants. I hate to say it, but alot of them are willing to work alot harder than our lazy neighbors. I am still agreeing with you. I just think it's a fine line to walk.

Oh by the way Señorita Castro, your last name is in Spanish, and you shouldn't forget about where you came from because if it wasn't for your ancestors you wouldn't be here, im not saying its ok to disrespect this country we all should be thankful, wether you were born here or not, it's just common sense. Why are you here?

its not the immigrants who disrespect the flag i think, but its more of the people born here that do. because the people who are here from other countries recognize our freedoms compared to the places they came from and they look at this country and say wow this is 10 times better from where i came from. they dont get caught up in BS and take advantage of a lot opportunites we americans overlook. i think a lot of the people born here disrespect the flag because we are spoiled, we get what we want but in getting what we want there is responsibilty and we dont want to take responsibility for the things we get so we ***** about congress the president and why america is so ******. but the beauty of our country is the immigrants. this is why its called the United States of America. Because not only are our states united but the people who come here from all over the world are also united.

I've lived in Florida and Texas, where every other person is an immigrant. I don't have any problem with people entering the United States - if they do so legally; an illegal alien (which is a ridiculous label), should be sent back to their country of origin -- how hard is it to understand the "illegal" part of that phrase? I have no problem with immigrants keeping their culture and language alive - and teaching it to their children. However, THEY moved HERE. It should be up to them to learn the language and our customs. If I moved to China, or Spain, or Russia, I would not expect them to learn English in order to communicate with me. However we ARE expected to learn to communicate with those that move here. We are also expected to adapt our culture to theirs, and to ensure that we cause no offense. I don't understand why they feel the need to move to the United States and then proceed to turn it into another China, Spain, Russia or wherever. For those that come here to do so, they should simply go back to their country of origin.

I don't see why so many answerers are being so rude here. She seems like a nice lady, and I understand your point. Immigration here used to be a privilege, people used to be honored to come here and have a chance at the American dream. Now, they feel like they are entitled to the American dream.

I want every immigrant to come here as long as they come in legally obey the laws of the land. If they do that then I welcome them with open arms. If they don't want to come in the correct way then I have a problem. Respect for where you live is the 1st key to living here.

Good points. Don't just come to America, be a true American. I think I read that from Reader's Digest or something.

Burning the flag and trying to have laws changed are rights of all american citizens. If you don't allow immigrants the same rights, then you're not being very american yourself. Especially since your ancestors immigrated there themselves and killed most of the original inhabitants. Next to that, burning a flag doesn't seem so bad, does it?
