I think in relationships like you describe the couple are so busy proving that they are equals in the relationship - "we're not just husband & wife, we are a team in our love - we are partners" that kind of mind-set or head-game. I think that's crap because I don't want to be a partner - I'm not in charge all of the time either, but it's a give and take - sometimes I'll lead, sometimes I'll follow.
(I'm always right, tho!!! lmao)

Im a straight woman and have been with my partner for over 5 years. I used to call him my boyfriend but then I gave birth to his son. After that "boyfriend" didnt sound serious enough so I call him my partner. I hate it though.
Funnily enough, when I am talking to someone I have just met and I mention my partner, I make a point of then saying "he" so they know I am talking about a man, as many people assume partner means same-sex.

I must admit I do that sometimes depending on the company I'm with; reason being, once over 30 you can sound a little silly calling your boyfriend your 'boyfriend'. I would probably say partner if I was with professional colleagues and wanted to be a little more proper.

it's the sign of the times...years ago it ws girlfriend or boyfriend, or other half or significant other....this day and age it's made to sound more upmarket, just because your being called a partner dont mean that your gay.....i have been with my man for 10 years i consider him my partner, it's just a new name thats all...dont worry about it

My dad and his 'partner' do this, because they are not married and they are kind of too old and have a child so can't be girlfriend and boyfriend. I prefer to say partner. saying boyfriend makes me feel really immature and uncomfortable.

My partner is still married and we have been living together for two and half years, but in our mature years I dont see us as boyfriend and girlfiend! He is my partner in every way apart from marriage so what else am I expected to call him!

I describe my man as:
my other half, my fella, a pain in the neck, the bane of my life, that geeky doofus, my fiance and yes, my partner.
Basically, whatever suits my mood. I don't, however, use 'boyfriend' as we're not kids anymore.
My brother is gay, and calls his man his partner, his friend and 'him over there' too.. depending on the cirumstances. lol
I don't think it matters what name you give them - they're your soul mate at the end of the day are they not?!

I think it comes about due to age. I'm in my mid-30s and it sounds very weird for me to say boyfriend - I feel as if it looks like I'm trying to act like a teenager.

Because boyfriend/girlfriend sounds a bit adolescent.
